Just wondering, would it be possible to create a mod that gives units speech when you click on them or send them somewhere? I know they are robots, and don't need to talk. But some kind of confirmation would be cool, even if it's very basic. Something like the T'au from Warhammer 40k would be awesome though: I've been looking at the audio files but they are all packed in some kind of format that I don't know how to open.
This is general discussion. Mods are over here: https://forums.uberent.com/forums/pa-mod-developers.72/
Man this reminds me of an early thread about PA. Whether or not Robots had a gender and if they had a voice.
I think all tanks and ships should be female, and all bots and planes should be male. Just because there hasn't been a single game that has done that before.
lol. I guess I was on the mod forums while thinking I was on the general discussion. hahahaha. whoops.
Voices adds veeeeeery high aesthetic value to the game. If you don't believe me. Let's take a little quiz from Starcraft... If you can ID these by the quotes, then you understand the aesthetic value.... "My life for Aiur!" "Battlecruiser Operational!" "You wanna piece of me, boy?"
Makes 'em instantly recognizable , just as that their aesthetic is all the same. You instantly know who's talking, no guess-work or long-term remembrance required. The original Dawn of War is the best though, the voice-overs there are absolutely brilliant (as ofcourse Warhammer 40k is brilliant in general). Playing as the space marines is awesome not just because of the gameplay, but because of the stuff they say while shooting and slashing their way through the enemy. A Dreadnought that wades into battle screaming "DIE DIE DIE" as it shoots it's gun and it's flamer simultaniously is utterly awesome, same as when you simply send him somewhere and he says stuff like "Even in Death I still serve" (the lore being that only the glorious dead will be awarded dreadnought armor, which keeps them alive and ready to serve longer) or "It is better to die for the Emperor than live for yourself!" with a heavy voice. It adds a lot of personality to a game. They can tell you about a faction's back story without cutscenes or long story-lines. For PA it could make a real difference between various factions, even if their units and gameplay is similar.
As long as it stays a mod, I don't need my Tanks(they're technically not even robots) spewing worthless and annoying one-liners at me all game. Mike
Well, they don't have to be one-liners either. Even a simple confirmation like "On the move" would be nice. It could help out new players like myself as well, if you are trying to recognize what unit you have selected from the strategic view. Personally I think the icons there can be very hard to read, and having a recognizable voice will helph with that so you don't have to zoom in to make sure that what you have selected really is a battle tank, and not a builder unit (as an example). As for drones not speaking, maybe But even the drones and units in Starcraft make a sound, despite all being part of a single mindhive. Personally I have always found SupCom to be too sterile in both look and feel, and a big part of that was the audio too. It made the whole thing seem pointless to me. I've always been used to voice-overs for units, in Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Company of Heroes, Starcraft, Dawn of War etc. and they were always a big part of drawing me into the game. They can add so much to the experience if done right. The only reason I bought PA is because I like the idea of hiding my stuff on other planets, which is brilliant. If I was able to make such a unit voice mod, that would be great. I just don't know how to yet.
