Underwater is way too dead.

In all seriousness though, it'd be nice to have something underwater to remind us that these planets are actually planets.

One of the things that drew my to PA was the fact that I was going to be able to turn once peaceful planets that sustained life into charred, war-torn hellfire pits utilized solely for the purpose of intergalactic war.

Some planet types it's understandable that no life is on it. But the earth-like and water planets should have at least some kind of fauna, whether it be alien or earth-like.

Interesting idea, and I'm almost certain it's already possible to add coral via modding ;)
if I get the blender->papa brushes features (you can have underwater features such as plants and rocks, but not brushes) pipeline figured out properly, I might give it a shot.

Sounds nice. Also sounds really, really low priority. :p Though I can't say I've been looking under water, like, ever.

Uber has expressed interest in making planets deteriorate as the wars go on, and at some point they'll probably implement new things to turn into collateral damage.

I'd be open to help as well, though Raevn's .papa importer/exporter should make it simple as it works as long as there are no rotated bones. :D

(I assume features need bones to show where they are set on the ground)

It would be nice if water actually looked like it has an ocean current.

That there was actually depth below it.

it doesnt have to be hard to make or very demanding.

But water and even more lava is just way to flat and boring atm. Those areas really lack.

Water used to he more opacite which means you could see through it more, it also means you could see the sea floor, the bumps, hills, etc... I prefer it, and miss it dearly.

Honestly I doubt that the water layer is ever going to be very good in PA until some major mod revisions are possible. It is completely baffling that Uber still doesn't think submarines are a useful component to naval play (see yesterday's Reddit AMA). To me, that says that the water component of planets isn't going to get fixed ... maybe ever. I've long had the impression that Uber kinda wishes they didn't have to do naval at all in this game so I'd be surprised if naval progressed much beyond what it is currently. Let alone any decent underwater topography. Maybe it can be modded in a couple years!

At least it's more than flat nothingness.
