UI question concerning Unit Icons

First of all, amazing game! Got it during the Humble Bundle sale, couldn't be more pleased, have been noticing huge performance boosts with the recent patches.

Being that I'm using a mac () and it's a couple years old, I'm trying to minimize processing power required. I have the Poly count turned down to 50%, and as such, I heavily rely on the unit icons. My issue is that when selecting 'always leave unit icons on' they completely vanish. Is anybody else having this issue? And is there a workaround? Sorry if this is a repost, I did some preliminary searching and didn't see anything on this subject.
