This kind what i was post some days ago, about the confusion on gameplay that you can´t scout easly or control the field enemy with easy view and you´r production at same time, the curvature off planets. Nothing bether to explain then this! Big maps epics battles, hundreds of units with perfect vision. Like PA is build we now its impossible we have something like this, but will it be similar? Seee the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tbq4pzt ... -So_GureAQ
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Yeah, no. Go play SC:FA then, if it's what you prefer.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil he's not saying he prefers FA, he's just wondering if it's possible to achieve such scale on PA. Now I guess that if one expect to have such scale, then this means having a really true giant planet. A flat map has "edges", a sphere is contiguous, there are no "edges". So a flat map gives the illusion that the battlefield is infinite and brings this epicness feeling. This is , afaik impossible to achieve on a sphere.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil While I do agree it would be good for units to have a smaller scale compared to the planet, I really think that the scale shown in the video is a bit too small.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Also, the fact that the map has borders sort of kills the impression of a giant battlefield... much less than a sphere.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil http://planetaryannihilation.tumblr.com ... 8784994422 Yes, it is possible. I'm not sure how well a planet this size would perform, or if it would even be possible to play a game on a planet this size, but there you go. Maybe if you had 6 Nvidia Titans running in SLI and 4 or so i7 Quad Cores running in parallel, as well as a small SSD worth of RAM, you could probably do it.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil I see no reason why that size planet would need the specs you are stating. The game isn't optimized in its current state, but by release that planet should be just as playable as the small ones we have now.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Well, looking at an unpopulated hemisphere of a planet (you can see 49-50% of a planet), it's about 4-5 million triangles. That is straight-up ridiculous already, mind you. Now, a planet 3000m in radius would have about 18 times the surface area of the current 700m planets. That's 18 times more triangles to render :X
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Keep in mind that this is all pre-optimization. There are ways to help scale down those numbers with graphics optimizations that atm would be waste of time for uber to look into before nailing the rest down first. And to be fair the last project I was working on we were pushing around 30 million tri's before we added batching and tessellation in and on my shitty laptop it still ran at 20fps. Edit: Sorry.. I meant 500 million before. 30 million after. 10-20fps for the 500 million and around 40-50fps for the 30 million. That was on an acer laptop with pretty sub-par hardware.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Scale like this would be wonderful. It doesn't need to be a globe so large that the map is flat like that, but just terrain, geography, and features that are that large compared to the units would really add to the feel of the game. Number of triangles isn't a realistic concern. With good level of detail optimizations, which Uber will certainly add eventually though they may not have them now, you've got a roughly constant number of triangles rendered no matter how large or small the object on screen is in physical units, because triangles are a function of visible detail, and when you're looking at a whole 3km-radius planet you're seeing far less detail.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil PA won't be about 10k on 10k units. It will be 1k on 1k on 20 different planets with asteroids smashing into those planets every 15 minutes. I think thats a much bigger scale than anything FA ever wanted to be.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Its not about the size, you can have all universe to play! Its all about simplify the gameplay,im ust to lot instructions at same time when you´r micro land+sea+air+ resources+ destroy has mutch has you can ,anything off enemy base or ,even iff its just 1 eng t1 that´s reclaim mass i think ColaColin understend me,you really must have a clear or easy way to spam/zoom in and out all planet. Iff not ,probably this will be bit confusion to many players. Remenber that at the and off game production , probably this game will have all we are talk now, but bether talk now then never
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil Agreed. Just look at how games like WoW, or even ES:Oblivion render stuff. Pay attention to the ground textures and objects. Then don't render everything, all the time. I'm not a graphics guru/expert or anything, but I'm sure optimization also includes reducing poly counts at far distances, and only rendering what polys you can see when you zoom in. I'm sure planets that size will be possible. As for scale: Solar Systems. More than one planet. Moons around those planets. Asteroid belts. SO MANY MAPS  and all of them part of a big super-map.
Re: This is the perfect scale ! Will we have something simil The problem isn't the number of units or play area available, it's just how big the units are compared to the terrain features. Mountains and ravines aren't very imposing when they're not much larger than your commander.
