This is a rewrite of an old PA story I wrote a while back, but I can't find it.

Attention: This is an outdated Thread and I have removed most of this passage from it. You can find the full Prologue here.

Commander Zech was a Raptor Centurion Commander that was constructed out of whim when a resource-rich system was converted into one that, unlike most, did not send troops and stage attacks, but rather produced Command units to further influence the war. He was created with several flaws, very quickly, because of an enemy faction approaching an uninhabited system adjacent to a key star. It was expected that they would attack and take the star's gas giants, after taking control of the system and utilizing it as a staging area, and later, defense.

After Zech won, he was to be dismantled, however, more reinforcements, from another faction that saw the strategic value and the faction that made the original attempts began sending orbital enforcements. Zech, being built out of haste, was left with the resources he had to work with, and had several flaws.

Within each Commander, there were two processors that every faction used, and no commanders knew about. The first was a link that emitted an invisible connection to a conglomeration of the faction, which usually implanted newer stratagems and basic updates into his mind. The second, was one that simply prevented free will.

People misunderstand the danger of free will. There is always the risk, that yes, one Commander might betray his faction and join another, and this was prevented with this module, however, the primary concern put in place by its designers was, one, that Commanders would realize that there was either no point to the war, or that the war could not be won.

In the case of Zech, he lacked the latter, and therefore, as his existence advanced, began to contemplate the reasons of his presence in the universe. It was not that the war could not be won, he was confident it could, as he had an optimist personality, but that there would be no point. Other Commanders, such as several Quad Osirises that were discovered shut down and implemented into the faction, were drones; they would complete each task without question. Zech did so always, until he slipped, and was on the verge of losing a battle. In his panic, he constructed a teleporter network that led him to an uninhabited system. This is where he stood now.
