Yes, it plays extremely similar to a 2d minecraft. It however succeeds everywhere Minecraft failed... And failed everywhere Minecraft succeeded. It has interesting weapons that are fun to use and challenging to get without being overly difficult to find. There is variety in terrains, enemies, and bosses. There is PVP worth playing. You can grow gigantic glowing mushrooms and even your own underground jungle, full of giant hornets and maneating plants. What it lacks is the creative side of Minecraft and infinite maps. This game is 10 times more fun to explore in than Minecraft, easily. The lack of infinite maps really hits it where it hurts. Tack that on top of the fact that with only 2 dimensions building is nowhere near as fun. Anyone else here played it at all?
I was considering about getting it, but I hate steam just because of they're DRM policies. Though it reminds me of Maplestory, even though i've never played that
Steam is great, never really have any problems with DRM from it. Terraria was fun, but it has little to no re-playability.
I really was tempted to buy it but every time I go to the Steam store page the trailer plays. I watch it for a minute and then I decide that I cannot stand the art style and 2D sidescrolling. OMG, it is sooooooooooooooooo ugly!!!
I almost bought it but decided not to last second. I was watching a buddy play and it seemed kinda fun but then he told me it does get old fast and there's not as much to do. The fact that by word of mouth it's considered "2d Side-Scrolling Minecraft" is probably what sells it the most.
You guys probably picked the best choice, because the game, while it is fun, does get old really fast like your friend said DeadStretch. The game is sort of like minecraft if it had much more loot based progression, but since it is in 2d this kills any re-playability it has because it also disables actually being able to build anything cool.
Money well spent imo. It was $10, I got a good 40 hours out of it. 30 getting all the loot, 10 dicking around with it. I would imagine the time would be halved if played with someone else because everything would become easymode(you can shave off 10 hours for a few of thew building projects I did as well, skybridges are obnoxious). Killing bosses is WAY harder to do by yourself than it is with friends. I recommend treating it as a singleplayer game until you get up to PVP level loot if you want the most time out of it. I play around with hax at this point. I'm making a PVP map with preset gear for 2 teams of 4. Despite what you'd think PVP is actually pretty fun. I'm hoping to get the map done in a few hours(of playing, building is boring so I'll most likely do it half an hour at a time). Once I get the map sorted out for PVP I'll most likely upload it to some site for people to download if they want to host PVP or modify it.
The good news is that Notch has played some Terraria and will hopefully make mobs and loot in Minecraft a bit more interesting. The only challenge fighting mobs in Minecraft is when you get a couple of lag spikes. Can turn a fight against a spider or skelly into an interesting experience...
There are always creepers. They are always watching, waiting CREEPING. And I have no idea why notch hasn't implemented grappling hooks yet. It would make minecraft INFINITELY more fun. There's a working grappling hook mod. I don't know why Notch hasn't made a similar legit one yet.
Most of the new features in Minecraft are based on ideas that came from the community. I don't think Notch makes any plans for Minecraft that go farther than the next two updates. He's probably one of the most unorganized game designers of all time. I wish Uber would have made Minecraft...
