Okay so we cant play team armies anymore... The lobby system is obviously to blame as team armies mode is part of the engine. I didn't realise that a social update would make it harder for me to find maps big enough to play with my friends and also make it so i was actually unable to play with them.
For any others with this issue, it seems the host is able to click the 'shared' button that will share your team like team army mode
