Is the tank's ability to crawl underwater and shoot at ships like a U-Boat a feature? or is it a bug? ... I keep getting "simulation terminated" how do i fix this?
Why wouldn't the future unmanned robotic tanks be able to drive underwater? Anyway. It is probably better for gameplay to have them not be able to drive underwater.
I'm sure there will be some sort of amphibious tank or whatever but it makes for better game play if most land units can't cross water.
Actually there are modern tanks right now that can drive underwater (usually just a river), and there are plenty of tracked robotic excavators that are usually used to move underwater stockpiles of coal (coal can spontaneously catch fire if stored in the air). While officially this is a bug I would like it to become officially a feature (although typically tanks shouldn't be able to fire underwater). Arguments that they should not be able to drive on the bottom because water would loses its value as a non-passable do not take into account that the sea bottom should not be featureless and flat and many coast lines should be a cliff. Also since submersed travel should be slower the flow fields should divert tanks around water. On the subject, I would suggest a crush-depth ratio be implemented where a units armour is deceased in a linear way depending on its depth, so if it sustains damage its crush-depth is raised, if its below its crush-depth it implodes. Even a sub could use this formula, so a damaged sub is effectively reduced to being a boat.
What's wrong with driving at the bottom of a river or swamp? If anything, it makes them excellent ambush points for heavy tanks. Hover units would obviously be unable to hide, adding more difference between leg types (which is a good thing). Not everything should have deep sea ability. But shallow water? That's simple. Keep in mind that these robots have self contained reactors and do not need to breathe.
Agreed! They wouldn't be able to attack underwater, but they'd be hidden from radar - and possibly sight (except for scout units), too? It'd allow for ambushes, and, indeed, differentiates more between 'normal' and 'hover'. Come to think of it, why shouldn't they be able to cross the wide open sea? The commander can do it too, I assume, so I doubt the G forces would destroy the units. And they'd be sitting ducks for anything that discovers them anyway.
Because, as has been mentioned, that terrain than loses its meaning when everything can ignore it. Also, its more interesting to have a diverse set of units that are used in special ways instead of jack of all trades. In other words, some units will be amphibious while others aren't.
There def should be amphibious tanks. The more specialized units such as this in the game creates new strats & ways to attack your opponent. Are any of the unique to PA units known at this point? It seems as if there are not many unique units like Supreme Commander had & that is not good.
A good previous discussion on shallow water movement: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=44559&start=0 If this is like TA, tanks will be able to cross shallow water (slowly), but they remain visible (sometimes only barely visible). I don't specifically remember if kbots and tanks are differentiated in this aspect (tanks slow down/slow down more/ can't move at all). As for PA, this could also be an area where tanks and bots can be further differentiated. Bots can move/ can move without a penalty while tanks can't.
