Have it installed, waiting to play this weekend. Sounds very cool. The description I saw of "Kind of dwarf fortress in space" was pretty much "Oh, yah, I'm there".
It's really good, stealing me away from making my Planetary Videos, it's that kind of addiction that keeps sucking you back even though you have other work to do.
I think I'll wait until it is further in development. I'm still waiting for somebody to make Dwarf Fortress with a good UI and I certainly like the SciFi setting. What worries me is that it will be dumbed down too much to keep me interested in the long run. It's too early to see how it will turn out eventually but it looks tempting already.
I've had a ton of fun with it so far, but it doesn't have a ton of features yet. It's a blast to mess around with so far, but a few months down the road, with more content and more systems, it's gonna be seriously addictive. People should still check it out, give them money, continue to support it. I am very much looking forward to the growht of this game, though for now, I'll probably only load it up every few weeks to see the latest patches, and hold off on epic sessions til later.
There are a couple of things that I didn't like about the videos I watched. DF has a wealth of resources, food types, weapons - even history. It is basically guaranteed that your next game will turn out entirely different. That's what many players love about DF. Now Space Base DF9 has one resource so far: mass. Your dudes come with all the equipment and space suits they need. They probably plan to expand on that. But I want to see how much first. They obviously already plan to include a friend or foe concept based on which music your spacefarers are listening to. That's an aspect I'm not interested in at all. I find it pretty ridiculous tbh. Before I support Space Base DF9 Double Fine has to convince me that: a) that SB DF9 is not just a quick money grabber title to get more money to sink into Broken Age. b) that the game goes into a direction I like. I have been looking for a good 'Dwarf Fortress with better UI' for a long time. The last one I got was Towns. Nice game, kept me playing a couple of hours but in the end it did not even come close to DF. I wouldn't think twice about it if SB DF9 was $10. But for $25 they have to convince me that it is worth my time and money first...
