Well, I've put in a bunch of hours playing Vs, Arcade and Challenges and have not unlocked new characters. I guess I can look online but I figured I would have unlocked at least one by now.
Unlocking characters is mostly just beating arcade mode (any difficulty, any number of rounds) with the right character. Akuma and Gouken are a bit more particular, but they're not that difficult. Let me know if you're still having problems unlocking characters, I think I still remember how to get most of them.
I got all the way through with Balrog, he's my character, but it seems there's no unlockables with him.
I, of course, am going to try playing through with a female character... but really I like to play all the characters to get used to them all, each one has different advantages to other characters, and I like to switch things up.
Yeah, the characters that unlock new ones are: C. Viper, Ryu, Sakura, Abel, Chun-Li, and M. Bison. Akuma requires that you beat the game with a character twice, with at least one perfect on the second playthrough. Gouken is similar to Akuma, but requires a perfect and two Ultra finishes. Seth is unlocked when you beat the game with everyone.
Really wankey? You play competitively at all? I've never been pro myself, but I've been beaten by a lot of pros in my day
