I miss them so.. They were my favorite subgenre of fps. Some gritty WW2 warfare! My favorite CoD of any... I can't wait for a revival someday. It's funny I can kind of layout the trends, y'know? WW2, then retro (minecraft and such), zombies, and now futuristic! I mean this as a huuuge generality.
Thankfully fads tend to loop back, so people missing out at any point can look forward to their fun times in the future. I'm enjoying the current slower action and roguelike trends, but those aren't shooters.
Eh, I dunno. I got kinda tired of shooting Nazis and Japanese people. But to be fair, I'm also getting tired of shooting Russians and the Chinese too. Just once I'd like SOMEONE to make a military FPS game where you play as the "bad guy". Like playing as the Nazi's/Japanese against Europeans, or the Russians against America.
I've heard good things about Wolfenstein: The New Order. You should pick that up and go shoot some Nazis. Also the new one is coming out: It's got Wilhelm screams. That's how you know it's a classic Nazi-murdering simulator.
I've played it! Amazing game. Kinda- Yep. WW2 is one of my favourite subjects, I just love it's type of warfare. Not advanced enough to just kill someone with a drone from mIles away and not old enough to be around in trenches or in lines in front of each other.
Shooters in general are generic. I liked when they first started as WWII shooters. Then they milked it. Then they made a new modern one. That was cool. Then they milked THAT. Now, I just want to play a shooter about a ridiculous futuristic gameshow where you kill your contestants via firepower melee and grapple and win bacon and bionic upgrade corporations sponsor you for it. Or, where you fight for the Global Defense Initiative or Brotherhood of Nod and fight as a foot soldier to defeat the opponent's base while defending yours from the opponent. C&C universe was a good setting for a shooter compared to generic military shooters.
The best part of WW2 warfare is that the guns and stuff make sense. You don't end up with weapons that are so advanced you should die instantly, or with a dumb tomahawk that kills across the map in a game full of lasers.

WWII still had artillery and rocket artillery. And the Germans literally had cruise missiles (V1/V2 rocket program). So uh... You LOSE Mr. Bond!
And these were commonly used implements... Seriously, WWII weapons were in fact more likely to leave wounded than dead, more than any other war's commonly used weapons, even factoring in their lesser medicine. If it wasn't an organ, despite the sheer scale, you seldomly died of complications, unlike vietnam and after, where the bullets spun and put oblong shredded gashes through the body instead of clean bullet wounds.
