It's been something that I've wanted to do for years, but never knew what the best way to do it is. I know some people on here record their games, so my question is: what is your method for recording? What hardware, price, setup, amount of hard drive space it takes, power of your computer to be able to do so without glitching, etc.

I record on the PC version using Fraps (link to my youtube in sig). The program's full version will run you maybe $30? Here is the breakdown for recording:

    Computer Specifications -
    i5 650 3.2GHz
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    8GB RAM

    Recording Setup -
    Microphone - Audio-Technica AT2020
    Recording Method - Fraps

Because Fraps uses your CPU's resources to record your games, it requires some sacrifices in terms of visuals or performance. In order to record at 60 fps (so I can still play my best), I play windowed 1280x720 on medium settings (vsync on). I can hold 30 fps recording at fullscreen 1920x1080 but I'd rather have a more fluid 60 frames at a lower resolution while recording. Besides, 1920x1080 files are that much more hefty (longer render and upload times) and YouTube 1080p option doesn't matter unless people are watching your videos fullscreen. 1920x1080 seems to make your HUD even harder to read in the flash player anyway.

If you are looking to record on the xbox version, I recommend either the Hauppaugge HD PVR or the Blackmagic Intensity Pro. Both cards require you to have a computer for managing the footage but the HD PVR is a stand-alone device whereas the Intensity must be installed in your desktop (PCI Express slot). The HD PVR records using component cables so you will not be able to play using HDMI. The Intensity can record via HDMI so you can still play with a crisper picture. Both the HD PVR and Blackmagic Intensity Pro go for about $200.

If people are interested in standard definition recording, the dazzle is alright. These days, don't expect many people to watch your videos if you are SD unless you have something truly unique to bring to the table (whether that be in terms of beastly gameplay or a special approach).

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The best thing to do would be play in SD for the games you want to record, unless you wanna pay for a expensive CC. When I played SR I used a cheap Dazzle 90 on a POS desktop that I had to use a very dialed down recording program to use.

    This might help

My HD-PVR was $180 and I use a USB extension to compensate the length.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

Basically, I don't want to spend too much, I have a laptop (one that isn't very powerful), and don't really care about HD, as long as it's watchable.

Don't know if something like that exists, but we'll see.

HD PVR is what I use. 200-250 is what you will pay. Windows movie maker is all you need for straightforward montages or commentaries.

For me, good quality = I can read the killfeed.

One question about the Dazzle systems, where does the video play? I would like to be able to play on my TV while recording onto my laptop.
