    Hi,

Today I've bought a new RAM upgrade for my pc going from 4 to 8 GB. After installing it and verifying that Windows registered 8GB I fired up PA and started playing Galactic War. This night I've had two out of memory chrashes while I've never had any before.

Below is the error message shown with Task Manager below it

    memory error.png

    The left top popup says

"Close programs to prevent loss of information. Your computer has insufficient memory available. Save your files and close the following programs: PA.exe."

    The top right says

"An exception occured (unknown software exception) (0xe06d7363) in the application on location 0xfce7940d."

Also my computer is not exactly top of the line so my graphical settings are almost at it's lowest, but this has not changed since my upgrade.

Is there something I should check or (re)install or is this just a software exception as the error states? If you require any other information just let me know.

The right message is the typical "At least one of your ram modules is defective" popup.
Use some memory checker tool to run some tests to see if your memory is okay.

if that doesn't work, post your dxdiag so we can see further information about your system.

although it does look like a defective memory issue.

The normal windows memory diagnostic test found nothing. I'm running the complete test now. I'll check the results tomorrow morning. It's now 00:30 am here so it's time for bed.

If this also finds nothing I'll add the dxdiag to this thread.

    Cheers,
    Rick

The windows test found nothing (as far as I understand the unreadable loggings), I will also run the memtest tonight when I'm back from work. I've already created the bootable USB drive and started a test, but I ran out of time to get to work :)

If that one also says no error I'll post the dxdiag, I know how to get it but thanks for the info anyway :)

    EDIT:
Small update, my pc is currently running the memory test (my girlfriend is home so she turned on the pc). I've already contacted the supplier, they also think it's probably a faulty memory, but they also wanted the results of the memory test before they will agree that I can return these ones in exchange for new set. So maybe I'll get lucky and have a new set this evening (I can visit the supplier) otherwise I'll have to keep on looking for other options (maybe a fresh windows installation or something like that)

I'll keep you posted. Thanks all for the (very quick) replies !

You say you installed additional RAM.

If you have set Virtual Memory Management to manual in the past, Windows has not automatically adjusted your pagefile size to accommodate the new situation or the drive with pagefile has not enough free disk space to expand.

The basic recommendation for pagefile size is 1.5 times your total RAM. Insufficient virtual memory *could* cause this error, whilst corrupted memory usually results in bluescreens (unless the affected portion of the memory somehow never gets addressed for system/kernel use).

That is a smart answer, yes I have indeed manually adjusted the swap file / virtual memory sizes in the past.

If the memory test doesn't show any errors I will set the "let the system decide" option back on and retest

Why would the system need a bigger swap file after having more ram installed?
I think on my system I have 2GB swap on 16Gb ram and it works fine.

Just for information. I seen same problem appear, but only in one case: when player used outdated Intel HD drivers.
It's wasn't related to RAM at all, just some glitch caused by old drivers.

It shouldn't need it. However, when I look at the errors, I see PA give a generic exception in conjunction with a Windows Out Of Memory error. PA probably gave this error because it failed to allocate memory, that is something you wouldn't expect, so why catch the exception. So why couldn't it allocate memory? That's something fishy. Like I said, it *could* be the virtual memory. But it could also be a driver/outdated library causing this. Don't know that much about 3d video programming and drivers, but perhaps an outdated video driver couldn't access something like a texture in the memory beyond the 4GB allocation space (but why would windows complain about memory then)?

All good questions. I know one thing so far. After 2 complete passes the mem test shows 0 errors so luckily it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. When I get back home I'll try out the other possible solutions

Well I've update my videocard drivers ( I was one or two versions behind) and I changed my virtual memory to 'auto'. I've just played two games of Galactic war and every thing ran very smoothly so this issue is resolved.

If I have to guess I think emrvb was right and the problem was with my swap file.

Thanks everyone for coming up with solutions, I'm going back into the game :)
