Really?...We've come to using such distinctions as "PvP" and "PvE" now, like this is an MMORPG? What happened to traditionally understood terms like "comp stomp" and just plain "multiplayer". And it depends on the mood.
I often like playing against the AI with a couple o' friends. I do like playing against other players too. Also, PvP and PvE are wrong terms. They do not belong at RTS games. PvE means Player vs. Environment, and the AI is not part of the environment.
I usually prefer single player, mostly because I don't have enough time to really get competetive with games these days. Also because I like playing with my friends and I'm generally too far out of their league to really make multiplayer interesting. If I do play multiplayer, I tend to prefer big team games over 1v1, simply because 1v1 falls prey to optimised play too much, and if there's anything boring...
Both Company of heroes was great example of how have good coop and pvp Other great example is men of war series One don't excludes others , tho implementing both may need a bit more work
I play mainly PvE as it is way less stressful for me. Also I play games for fun, not for challenge. For challenge I have my job .
Vs the computer, definitely. I've always had the problem that i can't find people on my level. I either get hammered to paste, or walk all over everybody. Hammering the comp is no big, i can always crank it up a notch, plus i don't feel bad raping the computer's gameplay. Doing that to a friend is no fun for me.
Co-op, for me it's fun working with the other player to figure your a course of action. PvP can be fun but I've never really felt a desire to compete on games, I just have the mindset that I bought this game to have fun, not to be annoyed by hackers and players who put much more time an effort into the game.
Just multiplayer. I would enjoy proper coop with interesting mission objectives but just regular old fashioned comp-stomp gets old fast.
I prefer PvP, it keeps the game fresh a long time PvE is btw a correct term, which is not only used by MMORPGs. Maybe you know the game Battleforge, a RTS game from 2009, there one gamemode was officially called PvE. And PvE is a broader term as just "comp stomp" or "skirmish". Because what about extra gamemodes where you fight on a map with lots of random (prebuilt) enemy bases where attack waves are triggered and you have to fulfill certain mission objectives (like collecting 3 secret techs which are located in 3 enemy bases), while the scripted waves get stronger and stronger? That's what it was like in Battleforge. Much like a mini coop campaign mission, in case of PA just without background or story (to keep the costs low). Those modes should be easy to build and could add a lot of replaybility for PvE players.
What about the option of FFA with a couple of players and some AI's? This topic is going nowhere and should be closed or moved to the non-backers forums
I'm with Colin on this one. For some reason once it gets above 2v2 I have no idea what's going on and play very badly. Although the Survival maps for FA can be fun occasionally.
Well for me it depends on the game genre. If it is a RPG a do prefer PvE but with RTS and strategy games in general I prefer PvP both 1v1 and together with friends against other people.
i played both 1v1 and team games in FA. IN the beginning I played more 1v1, but lately I prefer 2v2 up to 6v6
