So at the moment we can only play on the same single pre generated planet. This is fine and even expected for an early alpha. However at some point the planet generator will be completed and we will be able to play on all sorts of planets. I was wondering if there is any way to preserve the original alpha planet that so many of us have grown to know and love. That way we can load it up in the final released game and relive the old battles of the founders. I am quite aware that it will be possible to save planets but will it be possible to save this one? I ask because I rather doubt that we will be able to generate it ourselves once the planet generator is ready. Sure we could set the sliders to the same places but we'll never get quite the same thing as the original. Maybe it can be "Planet Alpha" or something and make it a pre made planet that ships with the game.
I second this. Gonna be super nostalgic. All us alpha backers are gonna have "our" planet to battle on.
What could be done is to have 2 types of planets: - Completely random planets and systems. - Pre made planets and systems. Wait, Didn't something like this come up in one of the live streams?
And the alpha planet is gone... oh noes. Uber I hope you did store the seed and whatever else made up that planet Well I guess you could just check out the corresponding version from your versioning system and have it.
The seed isn't sufficient. The planets are generated in parallel on multiple cores with race conditions. * remembers the live stream
neutrino corrected that statement in the forums I think: It is possible to recreate planets reliably. As we have seen in the recent alpha builds that recreated that one planet everytime.
Planets generate mostly reliable from the same seed. Preserving the alpha planet will be trick though because we change the generation algorithms. Probably the easiest thing to do will be to sync to an old version and then capture it somehow.
