What do you want to call fabbers then?

What do you mean fabbers? What are they?

    Engineer-type units.

Personally, I've got nothing against fabbers, but if you want something else... Contrivers, anyone?

Setting aside for the moment the possibility of an overdrive or other more elegant system than having maker structures, I think there should be two types of metal maker.

The first should be a T1 structure that converts energy to metal highly inefficiently, possibly called a convertor. Wasteful to use under most circumstances, but situationally useful.

The second should be an advanced structure that just produces metal while alive. Simply bundle the cost of the energy generator and the fabricator together, and call the result a "metal maker." True to its name, it just makes metal. The only feature you lose from this design is the ability to turn it off and get energy instead of the converted metal. This loss is significant, but honestly it's just a nuisance to have to toggle makers on and off, and they should just be stabilized and simplified. The maker is more expensive- add together the cost of the energy generation and the conversion into a single structure, and it just runs.

And if you're talking about constructors/engineers, then calling them builders or constructors seems better than calling them "fabbers" since fabrication seems more in line with a factory's function.

    Lathethowers.

As they are armed with a lathethower.

I just read Mavor's post where this came from...

Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it.

    Engineers use lathes.

    So Lathethowers.

Indeed. Perhaps we should call them "composers" as it seems artistic.

I am also partial to "hoke uppers" or "hokers up" because why not.

Yes, "fabber" sounds curious for a construction unit instead of either a factory or a mass fabricator.
And I don't know why, but for me it just doesn't sound right.

I like "builder", "constructor" and "engineer", personally.
And I can't decide if "lathetrower" is funny, clever, silly or just odd...

I'd really like to see them called fabbers as i get the reference, but whatever you end up calling worker units needs to be short on syllables or have a really good nickname since they're gonna be the most referred to units in multiplayer. "Lathethowers" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

Officially I'd call them "Fabricators" and the community will shorten it to "Fabbers" regardless.
In the same way SupCom "Engineers" are almost always referred to as "Engies".

They should be called "Zap Fabricators" because of how they use energy/nanotech etc to fabricate. Yea. Then we can all affectionately call them "fappers." I like this idea.

    Edit: Dev Ninja'd. :p

Fabber doesn't really roll of the tongue easily. :S
    Composers sounds cool, IMO.
