People hosting matches with 16 planets is annoying. It lags me and the server and everyone. if the game's been hosted on a server that belongs to uber, can you prevent the system selecter from choosing systems that are too large?
The server is hard coded to only allow 16 planets, even though in the system editor it is possible (with a mod I believe) to make larger systems. The thing is 16 planets are quite manageable *if their small* as its surface area that matters (16 r200 planets have less area than 1 x r1000 planet). The issue is sometimes people host systems with multiple r800 or r1000 planets in and I agree *that* is overkill however *technically* within the limits. Another thing to bear in mind- this might not actually lag the server at all, you'll get terrible lag your end if you don't have enough ram to hold the whole map. Players with 16+ gb of ram may not notice any issue which is why they host the game. I've mentioned before and I think it's worth repeating, it would be superb if Uber could implement an indication of the memory footprint of a system. Show them as 4gb, 6gb 8gb, 12gb and 16gb maps. That way you can see at a glance "oh that's a 12gb map, probably bad idea for me to join as I have 8". It would also make it clear to the person *hosting* how big the map is (and maybe make them consider dropping it down a bit). The issue though is estimating the memory required for a map might not be that easy, @sorian any thoughts on how feasible this is?
Yeah, nothing wrong with 16 200m moons. Problem is if planets are big. Plus if they have big forests/jungle, I don't know about server, but it lags my PC hard.
What's more annoying to me is when people with weak computers join my lobbies. Your problem can be prevented by you simply not joining matches with 16 planets, but there's no way to prevent my problem. Even cdrkf's solution wouldn't solve it, since people would still join lobbies their computers can't handle because... people. It would be more helpful if their RAM was indicated by clicking on their names, so that I could vet who gets to stay in the lobby and who doesn't.
Players with weak PCs won't affect the game for you if yours can handle it. Only if the server can't handle it will you get any impact.
Raevn beat me to it. There is no way someones weak pc hampers your experience. If they lag because of a weak setup their clientside fps will drop but the server sim will remain the same. The only way to kill someones experience is to build a million units and especially sending a million dox through a teleporter (its the biggest lag issue because of unit collisions as the more dox you have the lag will grow exponentially). So to be clear, If you play with someone who has the crappiest pc you can imagine, he will NOT affect you gameplay.
Not only will he affect my "gameplay", but quite often he will DESTROY it. I already posted this above in response to raevn, but there was some problem with a mistaken double post and I think it was erased. Here is my message again: 1. They take ages to load the planet in the lobby, during which time other players get tired of waiting and quit, making the lobby a pain to fill 2. They take ages to load the system, and end up spawning randomly instead of choosing their spawn, wreaking havoc for the team they are in, thereby lowering the level of challenge of the match for all other teams 3. They usually quit very soon after the game begins, once they realize they can't play, thereby messing their team up, and again lowering the level of challenge of the match for all other teams
