So now that there are multiple planets all of which have different looks and such, I thought it would be a cool idea to have a sort of specialization on certain planets. For example: Lava planets have an abundance of metal, Metal planets will increase the amount of energy you produce on that planet, etc. This could increase the value of certain planets, causing potential orbital battles over obtaining strongholds on these planets, and could force more land battles than just on the starting planet.
The example you gave seems a bit backwards but I like the idea of specialized planets. That way each planet isn't just a reskin.
I think it's a nice idea, my preferences would be: Gas has specialized energy plants and only allows orbital units. Metal gives a boost to metal extractors and has tech that can be re-activated. Lava has more geothermal vents (if those go into the game,) and doesn't allow boats. Moon doesn't allow air units. Water doesn't allow land units. Desert is windier, but metal is more sparce.
That's been mentioned before – to an extent. Uber has mentioned that there will be some stuff like this in the game, we just don't know too many details. They've mentioned that Gas planets won't have a surface, so they won't be much in the way of combat. However, they will be massive resource generators, so they'll be very important. I'm guessing it'll be primarily orbital stuff. Where you launch orbital harvesters, orbital fabricators, and orbital fighters over to gas planets and they provide lots of resources. But since they don't have a surface, you can't build factories on them.
Planet specialization, Agreed. Why have diffrent planets if they are basicly all the same anyway. Ice planets could slow down units. Lava planets if you bomb the vulcano it'll explode. Lava planets less line of sight/radar because of smoke. If you dont like this, just play on earth like planets.
Uber has already stated there won't be Star Wars/Star Trek/Battlestar Galactica like space battles. Any units that are in space will be planet hopping or will be confined to the orbital layer. The reasoning for this is two fold. One, that's a lot more development work and Uber already has a tight deadline. The primary reason though is Uber doesn't want to make the game too complicated. Imagine fighting two battles on the surface of two different planets while you have orbital units fighting on a different Gas Giant while you have a Star Wars style space battle in deep space. It'd simply be too much. This game is already going to be pushing the limits on having too many things to focus on. There is speculation that a mod will add such functionality though.
