Out of curiosity will we see at a later date a full planet editor, where you are able to fully design your own planet or will it still be down to a generation of the planets surface?
Uber isn't planing on releasing tools like that, but Neutrino has commented that they are leaving modding hooks in so at some point you'll prolly see something pop up along the lines of what you're talking about. Mike
What knight said. A full on editor isn't part of our plan but I want to enable the hooks to build such a beast.
a planet editor would be great Solar system or famous star systems from science fiction franchises like Star Wars or Perry Rhodan
Random planet generation is going to dramatically change how the galactic war mode plays out. Why play the same map twice, when the galaxy has beyond trillions of stars?
I've noticed that as the planet generation algorithms change, the seeds become corrupted to the point that they no longer resemble the originally saved planet. Will there likely be a way to export a planet or save the mesh in order to have it survive algorithm changes (even bug fixes post release could affect the generator of course)?
Long term this might not be needed. Right now yeah things are changing so drastically that old seeds don't really work anymore, but I doubt we'll be seeing these kinds of drastic changes post release, until we get to a more stable platform it would be hard to see how needed such a tool would be for all users. Mike
Yes, full planet saving will be supported (it is a required feature for game save/load). The current system just saves the inputs.
Another use case for exporting would be to compliment the potential importing of meshes as planets which Mavor allured to in the past. Being able to export a planet and then touch it up and then re-import could be very cool. EDIT: Ninja'd!
