Didn't want to hijack someone elses thread with this but how about this as a backstory to PA? Don't laugh though - first effort! A short video plays showing something that looks like a very archaic robot stepping out of an ancient structure. The machine itself looks to be badly damaged as well as he stumbles slightly when exiting the odd building. Slowly making his way over towards a small valley he collapses and begins to initiate his self destruct sequence but not before nanolathing a small spherical object that is almost liquid in appearance. It then begins to roll away from the enormous machine as the countdown continues. The object reaches the other end of the valley and in the distance an enormous explosion rips through the valley sending dust and debris everywhere. The object however reaches a secluded area and then begins to flatten itself out. In the process the ground underneath it is almost swallowed up and hollowed out as it uses the mass to enlarge itself exponentionally. After a few hours the now much larger liquid sphere hardens with a shell like appearance and shortly after, a hammering sound is heard from inside it. The shell then shatters and slowly emerging from the rubble is a tiny robot bearing an alien mark on it's right shoulder. It's now hundreds of thousands of years after this event and the home world of this new race begins to receive garbled and incoherent messages from the furthest reaches of the galaxy. An investigation was launched and units were dispatched to the distant world of Trachan 7. What the squad found was most disturbing to it's core network - another shell was found in pieces and dated at almost 300,000 years old. Exactly the same age as the one that gave birth to the now dominant Visk Empire. This startling disovery was interrupted however when communication with the squad was suddenly terminated and only static remained. Many more new questions began to circulate. In response to this threatening event the races greatest warrior is dispatched to uncover the mystery and reveal the nature of this disturbance before it becomes a danger to the galaxy's greatest empire. Not a serious effort but yeah I can't leave the old factions from TA alone
I think my favourite game backstory is the one crypticsea wrote for his 100 player arcade game C:Medieval And, obviously the barebones spoken TA intro. Broad strokes, everyone, let's hear a round of applause for the most suitable story-conveying technique in high-gameplay videogames!
It's very simple. Imagine that you live in a time of war and terror. Nukes - or whatever - fall left and right, raping and looting is commonplace, and anywhere with other humans is about as safe as a dive in some lava. But, luckily, you, hidden away in a deep tunnel, have a robot. A servant, who makes sure you get food and drinks. A servant that repairs and copies itself, so that, should one break down, another will be there to take its place. A self-improving servant, too; every copy is better, and potentionally specialised at various tasks. A servant that guards you from hostiles. For indeed, everyone who isn't you will be shot on sight. After all, other humans are hostiles. Then, one day, you die. But your robot lives on. It - he? - meets others. It destroys others. It, along with its army of clones, spreads out across your hiding place (and also, your dying place). And as they spread further, they meet more 'enemies'. Humans, robots... Living creatures identified as threats. And so they kill. And copy, and specialise. Special models to kill from far away, special models to detect everyone, special models to kill at close range... This happens everywhere. There's no reason why it wouldn't happen, after all. And thus the living are exterminated, leaving naught but a universe torn asunder by war, as their sole legacy. May they rest in peace.
There was this planet named Cybertron.... Oh wait. Never mind. As Neutrino has hinted at, we have some back story, and are working on more, but we're not ready to release details on it yet.
