    ...as annoying as The Assassin?

I understand he has a cloak ability as well and can actually disguise himself. Does he make you swear like a random assassin backstab does?

TF2's Spy class is remarkably similar(and different) from MNC's Assassin. I think I'll just go over the Spy's abilities overall instead of a more direct comparison :)

    Health: 125 HP(lowest base HP)
    Speed: 100%(average)

Primary: Revolver. Does 20-60 damage depending on the distance from the target, expect a median damage of 40. It's very accurate, capable of being used as a makeshift(albeit weak) sniper rifle.

Secondary: Electrosapper. It's sole function is immediately disabling and slowly destroying enemy Engineer buildings. On consoles only an enemy Engineer can remove these with their wrenches, but on PC there are just a few more ways of getting rid of these. More-clever console Engineers may even destroy their building instead of the sapper, depriving you of points :|

Other: Disguise kit. On consoles you should absolutely NEVER disguise as an enemy medic(it's like holding up a great big sign saying "hi, I'm an incompetent spy!") and disguises are only useful for slipping past enemy sentry guns unharmed. On PC, they're more useful but spychecking is easy in all versions of TF2. More on that later.

Melee: Butterfly knife. When attacking from the front, it's amongst the weakest weapons in the game with damage only being ~20. If it strikes a foe's back, however, it's an instant kill(unless they're ubercharged).

Watch: Pressing the altfire button for the Spy makes him cloak. Activating and deactivating it takes ~1.5 seconds wherein he's somewhat visible, but if you're not touching any enemy player/Engineer building/on fire/underwater, you are 100% invisible. The problem with this is that your cloak only lasts 10 seconds and recharges slowly, as well as it requires you to decloak fully before you can attack. Being caught decloaking is usually a death sentence as well with your low health, so you have to think before acting.

Notice how MNC's Assassin is less useful in Crossfire the fewer and better players there are? This goes double for the Spy. The Spy also has a greater learning curve AND skillcap. Great Spy players can master the timing of their cloaking and potentially go on epic stabbing sprees, even winning a melee fight with a class that has more than twice the health if they're clever with their attacks!

...But now for the really bad news. On PS3, TF2(sold only in the Orange Box on either console) is practically unpatched. It's horribly imbalanced, there are so many map exploits it's not even funny, and the dedicated servers have a map vote system that pretty much ensures you're going to be stuck playing nothing but 2fort with the rare Dustbowl game. On 360, most hosts block Spy outright because they suck so much and Valve's response to the widespread modding was to block out even modding that could be used for good(such as alltalk games) and give all hosts the ability control the number of each class per team...Which can potentially allow more pathetic hosts to completely block a team from spawning at all.

On PC, it's a whole different ballgame. There are tons and tons of rebalances that make the game more fun, unlockable and/or craftable weapons for each slot(no replacement for the disguise kit though) for ALL classes, over thirty official maps(versus six on console) with an infinite amount of custom maps, the skillcap for all classes is even higher(their roles may even be much different with some loadouts) and just a crapload of more stuff. If you have a PC that can run it, TF2 only costs $20 on Steam or purchased in disc form. Either way Steam is required...but Steam is free and pretty damn awesome, actually. The console version of TF2 in the Orange Box pretty much never retail over $20 even new, but they also include the Half-Life 2 saga as well as crazy-popular Portal :)

    Hope that helps.

Oh, and if that wordy post makes TF2 sound like it has a steep learning curve...It does. It requires some dedication and willingness to learn on your part, but once you're competent at the game it's a lot of fun. Except the class-blocking tards on the 360 version and massive amount of imbalance + glitchiness on PS3 :(

Spies are alot harder to master than Assassins.

On the Xbox 360 TF2 (No updates or anything) The spy is very effective and not too difficult to use.

On the PC the Spy is a really difficult class compared to the Xbox version, On PC the servers usually have more than the Xboxes standard 16 players so it's harder to get around unnoticed and with all the updates Engineers have remote sentries and Snipers have the backstab shield and Jarate.

    Assassins can attack while cloaked.
Spies have to decloak before attacking (where they can be seen and killed)

Assassins can/almost instant kill a player from the front.
Spies do almost no damage if its not a backstab.

Basically you can't dodge an Assassin so it makes you angry and if you get killed by a Spy it means you were careless so it's not so much a bother.

Spy's only really as easy to use as your enemies are skilled if the server size is at least 8v8. The smaller the number of people, the more difficult it is for spies. Larger numbers of people mean more distractions, so if you're careful you can get in some truly devastating stab sprees

Razorback? Anyone that uses this is going to suck so bad it's not even funny. Remove it from the equation: Ambassador headshot will cripple them, if you're in melee range you should be able to get off a bodyshot to finish them before they can kill you.

    Jarate? Stop being so predictable.

Wrangler? Be less predictable, or try out Your Eternal Reward. Being disguised as an engineer before a sentry can shoot you...

You could always just try to be more clever with your disguises and use the Dead Ringer. If you're disguised as a friendly pyro...well, most people aren't going to expect a pyro to be a spy

I always used the watch that dropped your cloak as you moved, and recovered it while you stood still. Forget what its called.

Take the assassin, and make them slower, give them several hard counters, and remove their dash and smoke bomb escape tools. Whaddaya know, it's the Spy.

Spy is useless against an even halfway competent team. Assassin is not.

The Spy's backstab is always fatal unless the target is ubered with the medic's original medigun or the target has immunity(another Spy using the Dead Ringer or a Sniper that hasn't lost his Razorback due to a previous backstab attempt). It needs no upgrading and has a full 180 degree target area. The target's health doesn't matter.

In contrast, the Assassin's assassinations can easily be survived by high-health classes, anyone with armor, or just if you haven't upgraded her dagger to a katana yet. While unlike the Spy's backstab the Assassin's assassinations can be performed at any angle relative to the target...It's idiotic to not attack from behind.

Was TF2 only released in the US? I've never even heard of it.
I've just googled it & I love the look of it. But...
I can't find a copy of a PAL version of it anywhere.

Protip: never buy a Valve game or game that runs on the Source engine for PC or mac any way except via Steam. You need Steam to play it anyways and if you actually do buy a Valve/Source game in retail you'll have to pop in the disc every time you want to play it. You could probably get it(any Valve/Source game) cheaper on Steam too: sales aren't uncommon on Steam and sometimes they've gotten to some pretty crazy prices. $1.50 for a game that normally goes for $20? Yes please!
