Whenever I boot up my PC now it won't go past the bios screen ("American Megatrends" in my case) unless I hit F1 and then just exit to reset the machine. When I do login, I find that the date has reset itself to the first of January 2007, 12:00 am. This has happened twice now and I'm pretty sure computers aren't supposed to do that. After a quick google it seems I need to replace some battery on my motherboard maybe. That or my PC is becoming self-aware.

    Also this may be relevant:
To save power I turn off my computer/monitor/speakers and hit the main power switch at the back of the case so it isn't using that little standby power.

PS: This doesn't reoccur if I restart my computer after it's happened. Also when it has reset the time all of my taskbar icons (those ones in the bottom left) are gone except for volume.

I think the answer to that question is obvious: Make sure not to anger your PC now, it may decide to take over world domination. A new battery probably would make it feel merciful to us for a few more years.

try the CMOS tool in the bios:

edit the date and then restart. If that doesn't work then you either need a new CMOS battery or can try leaving the PC on for a few days which apparently could save the settings.

    thaaaaaaaaaat's the battery.....

no cause for alarm it's really all this battery does.... keep the time. ...have you never wondered how it was that the bios and OS time was up to date when you started it back up after having unplugged it to move it or something?

just buy a new flat battery and when the pc is powered down and unplugged replace the old one.

    problem will be fixed.
