So.. I was in a lobby with a party of 6 people... We had played a few games and the usual lobby behavior was happening -- waiting for more players until there were exactly 12 in the lobby (an equal amount of 6 on the other team). I believe the behavior of the "host" is to wait until the opposing team has at least as many players on it as there are in the largest party (or maybe the sum of all members of parties?) on the other team before starting. This is usually fine, but we need an upper bounds check! While in the lobby, waiting for 6 randoms to show up so our game would commence, someone joined our XBL party, and then joined our MNC game. Now, I believe the host saw us as having a party of 7, and although the lobby now had 12 people in it, the game wouldn't start. It just sat there saying, "Waiting for players". Crazy, eh?
I've had this happen to me too. This is why we keep our party set to private/invite only. Just sayin'
