I am using the Steam version.

Recently re-installed Ubuntu 14.04, not using XORG drivers, but I have tried both proprietary drivers and the XORG driver. No luck.

I can start the game from the shortcut or Steam client, but a blank window opens up, and if I click on it after a couple minutes it says: "This window is not responding...". I force quit because there is no HDD activity. I have verified game cache, I have reinstalled, etc. No luck.

    Any suggestions?

I have a Dell Latitude 3540, uses i5-4200U's HD4400 GPU for 2D and AMD 8850M for Gaming. Other games I have tried work, but I don't want to play them! Thanks for your time.

Do you run PA on the Intel or on the AMD?

If AMD, did you install the drivers from the Ubuntu repositories? If so, you might want to try the newer ones from AMD directly. See this thread for more info. You also need "debhelper" and "xserver-xorg-dev" for that apparently. Another thing you can try is starting PA with --software-ui and see if that works.

Does it work when you use the Intel GPU?

Thanks for your reply. I am still new to Ubuntu...I have it installed but often end up in Windows 8.1. Trying to ween myself of that habit tho.

As-far-as running on Intel or AMD, I don't see a way to control that in Ubuntu like Windows.

I am choosing the drivers from the Additional Drivers under Software and Update.

    My options are:
X.Org X Server - AMD/ATI display driver wrapper from xserver-xorg-video-ati (open source, tested)
Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx (proprietary)
Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx-updates (proprietary)

I have tried all 3, X.Org won't even let me launch the game, the other two get me to a window that does nothing.

I will check out the thread you linked...I haven't tried software UI. And if you know how I can launch using the Intel GPU I'll try it. Hoping I can make the AMD adapter work though...it worked back in May last time I tried this.
