This looks very cool, although I must ask, what will we be able to use this for?

From what I understand after reading the post, it looks like changing orbits is either back, or coming back very soon.

No, this is reality as we know it. An easy feature to make, giving planets "clipping" while in orbit instead of giving them clipping when weaponized. But still effective nonetheless.

I thought he just meant that units will take longer to move between bodies.

I think I'm just gonna fire it up and have a look, I learn by doing most of the time. I'll be back.

What if we could set maps where the orbits of two planets would meet after a certain time interval?

Just tested this - and it is pretty awesome.
The first time a small moon barely touched the main planet, tearing a big hole in both of them.
After quite a few rotations about the solar system (elliptical orbits) they finally crashed into each other and devastated everything on them.
This can be used for games where for example time is a limiting factor: "You have 20 minutes to finish the game before the planets destroy each other" etc..

Now what would be cool for the system editor:
A simulation timer, which shows how much time in the game would have passed after pressing "Simulate".
And resetting the planets to their original positions after pressing "Simulate" again to stop it.

I love it, but my question stands.

I'm just curious how will this improve gameplay, apart from cases where things were put too close to each other in the system designer. I'd just like to know the future vision behind this.

Don't get me wrong it's still awesome.

Free for all doomsday countdown, the planet everyone starts on will collide 10 minutes after game start, you all gotta get off before then. opportunities to harass and slow down other players from getting orbital out in time.

Really valuable planet for metal is on a collission course with another planet, you gotta get halleys on the other planet and get it out of the way to save the valuable planet.

    those are just two scenarios.

Oooooh! Idea! (when/if planetbusting metal planets are implemented)

Free-for-all on a metal planet with another world en route for a smash. Players have to fight each other or work together in order to control the metal planet and destroy the incoming moon/asteroid.

So, they idea of launching planets into the sun is finally viable. Two planet are going to collide in x time, no matter what planet you are one, you die. Send on into the sun and you survive.

OR, you know, just change its orbit and keep the planet for yourself.
