Things get more confusing everyday, last time I played a smash removed the entire target planet, and just now only my base was destroyed.
    Or was it a bug?

It's intended and destruction depend on planets size.

Yep, now the planets do damage determined by their and the target planets size. I didn't test it yet, but you even should be able to crash a larger planet through a small moon.

If Halley-moon/planet is smaller than target: Area annihilation depending on size of the Halley moon/planet

If larger: Replace the target one (I think)

    If same: Both get annihilated.

All the plant life should die regardless.

Proportional smashes are fun. However, it would be nice to know whether the impact will only destroy part of the planet or all of it. I tried to go for a tactical planet smash to destroy a base earlier. Vaporised the entire planet.

Any idea on the damage caused? Guessing it's more than commander hp though.

No idea, My base was destroyed a few vanguards near the enemy base survived the impact, probebly because they were outside the damage zone.
The planet wasn't that big so it must have been a very small moon I guess.
