Not sure when the best time is to raise the issue of the strategic icons, I know it's early days and there are a mountain of bugs to sort through, but a bunch of us have been playing and one of the things we are not fans of are the current strategic icons. Basically, each icon is a quite detailed picture of a unit, which mean it has to be fairly large on the screen and lots of icons together looks very cluttered quite quickly. My preference would be for abstract icons, you know: triangles, squares, diamonds, etc. maybe with squiggles to represent additional features. Obviously I'm suggesting similar to the FA icons, but it would have the advantage of containing a lot of information while remaining simple in form and uncluttered. Anyone else share this preference, or am I afraid of change and should learn to get used to it?
Related to this topic in a way: FS#5 It's a very "first pass" icon spread at the moment. They are far from done, with many being duplicates.
OK, well this might be blasphemy, but I've essentially ripped off the FA icons and put them in PA format. Not tested them all yet, but IMHO it looks muuuuuch better. Apologies to the devs! Just replace the folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Planetary Annihilation\PA\media\ui\alpha\live_game\img\strategic_icons with the contents of the zip file
I said so in the other thread but I'll say it again here. These icons make the game MUCH more readable. Especially when I'm so used to them and know what they mean. The one thing I wish you could do would be to make them have a white outline when selected. I poked around a bit but couldn't see a straightforward way a noob like me could do that.
OMG OMG OMG !!! I am so trying this today. I was just thinking how much simplier it would make the game if, for example, for the Power generator, we'd have a square with simplified lightning bolt or something, intead of the little land-mine lookalike current icon and for the construction bots some kind of a shape (square, circle, triangle) with a wrench (just an idea). Thank you thank you! P.S. Blasphemy or not, taking the ideas that work and implementing them should not be considered a bad move. Supcom had this almost perfected and PA is like a supcom in an alternative universe
