Not sure, haven't worked on a keyboard with a US layout in quite a while. My coworkers with US keyboards usually just type 'ue' instead of .

our bog-standard qwerty keyboard doesn't have that character.

although on some programs you can make a by holding ctrl+shift then hitting n. can make other chars with combos of ctrl+<accent key> then the letter.
