Hopefully someone from Uber drops in and reads this :)

I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on getting into this industry. I started a 4 year Computer Science degree this September and dropped out in mid-October. The course was 50% maths , and I couldn't stick it. I haaaaaate maths

I really don't know what course to do now. I still really want to get into this industry, and I wonder if I should have just stuck with CS...

stick with CS or do some learning on your own.

Jobs in the game industry fall into several disciplines and sub-disciplines like programming, art, design, audio, and production. If you're a badass in one of these disciplines then it'll be easier getting a job. If you're good in more than one of these then even better. Art, programming and audio are more tangible skills and are easier to demonstrate in a portfolio or code samples. Design and production is harder to demonstrate and usually takes some real good communication skills to show off.

I would look through http://www.gamedevmap.com or Gamasutra.com at the various job postings of studios that you're interested in to get a good idea of what they're looking for. It is not easy to get into the industry and there are TONS of people looking for work and is very competitive. Unless you're willing to sacrifice your current way of life and willing to work your *** off, don't even bother thinking of games as a career.

Ooh, PopCap are in Dublin! I can't really go back and do CS :| I don't know, programming just didn't "click" with me (We were learning C) and the maths just melted my brain every day. If I can find a permanent job after Christmas, I'd nearly take another year out... I'd love to travel, and get some REAL experience, like visiting some studios and actually seeing what people do on a day-to-day basis. I really think I need the extra year for personal development, too. In that case, I'd be turning 21 in October of my first year of college - is that a little too old? :p

I just really don't know what I want to "do" :|

How would someone who is an "audio guy" go about getting into the game biz? Just a general idea is all I am really looking for.
    Thanks

It's a pretty deep topic depending on your skillset and what the position you're looking for.

Yeah I understand. I thought maybe the audio side had a different route. You're an art guy why was I asking you? lmao j/k
    ;)

    [Edit]
I think I killed the thread with my attempt at a joke...

I always hear folks say NEVER get into the business hoping specifically to design games and don't choose, say, programming as your field and hope to branch off into game design. This have basis in real life?
