So I had to restart my laptop today, and when it booted up I discovered Chrome had updated itself too. MY SESSION BUDDY DATA WAS ALL GONE! 76 TABS OVER 4 WINDOWS!!! Does anyone know what my best chance of getting them back is? I have a USB with Ubuntu on it if that helps and I'm about to try a windows recovery program. I also have an older session buddy file from a few months a go which I would use but it doesn't work for some reason. If anyone knows why that's the case please help. .
It saves your tabs and reopens them in separate windows at your command. A tab-hoarder's best friend.
Have you tried turning if off and on again? I have absolutely no knowledge of how Chrome apps work, if I'm honest. I'm surprised that the data just erased itself when a new version of Chrome appeared. Is there any way you could revert your Chrome back to the version that worked?
First rule of data recovery: Don't do things that might overwrite the data you're trying to recover. The nonfunctional backup still has URLs in it. So I can do it manually. But that would take a while...
On a scale of 1-10 how hard would it be to code a program to scan txt files for URLs and then compile said URLs into a list in another txt file? Anyone?
^and the answer to that is wingrep or googling some command prompt mumbo jumbo. Wha? This thread was not what I expected it was...
That depends entirely on your level of programming skill. I just tried to write pseudo-code for it based off my very limited python skills and failed miserably. I'd wager someone like @cola_colin could whip something together in less than an hour. Probably significantly less.
I was going to outsource it to a friend who actually knows how to code. The most complicated thing I've ever coded was a .bat file that recreated the BSOD from Portal 2.
You know Chrome can save all the tabs you had open during your last session, right? Please tell me you know that. Pretty easy. I'd imagine someone could knock up a Python script faster than I could put together a small Java program though.
I hoped for similar things. On the 1-10 thing: Depends on the textfile, but certainly not a big issue. Also I am using the build in session storage and it never failed me. I usually am below a dozen tabs though.
Oops should have been here yesterday. I reinstalled and reinstalled SB when this happened to me and it fixed it fine.
