Call me crazy, but this is one of the most fun/hilarious tactics I've used, maybe the most. Gunner, with Gold: Speed, Silver: Skills Recovery, Bronze: Reload Speed. You're almost always using mortar with this setup, because you don't wanna get caught in medium range. You're a pulverizer in long and short range, with pretty good manueverability because of your Gold Speed. To start the game I update Slam and Grapple. Third upgrade is passive so your mortar splits into 2. From there what you upgrade depends on your class match-ups and how the game is going. If there's alot of assassins, I upgrade slam so the second I hear the hum I just jump (so they can't grapple) and slam and off they go if they don't die outright. Now, half the reason I use Mortar here is because not only does it throw people off, but due to you pounding targets (and especially turrets, you wreck them easily!) long range, assassins will come after you like crazy, because they figure even if they don't kill you from the grapple, your mortar is useless and they'll get the kill. The hilarious part is, if you don't jet into the air in time to avoid the grapple, you just grapple them back for the kill which is hilarious because they never expect it. If it's upgraded to 3 you'll throw them too! What about things like assault? Well, hold them off at long range with the mortars. Medium range they have the advantage obviously, but the cool thing is, with the mortars, their first instinct is to keep closing distance, which is where you catch them off-guard with your speed. Jet in the air for a sec to throw their aim off and then grapple them. If it's not lvl 3, you're still ok, because the second you're done with the grapple you just slam and they're dead or off the map. You gain money quickly from bot destroys with the mortars and because alot of your slam kills on some maps are ringouts for $100, $150 if you can pull off a taunt afterwords. Idk, most people will scream about how "stupid" this is, but even after only playing a few maps with this, I've finished 2nd in every one so far (and I never play gunner either, so I'm still getting used to the movement and weapons). Noooo one expects it, which right now works to your advantage unless more people start doing this. Everyone expects dual gun spam. [EDIT]: Actually starting with Slam and Passive might be better because you can use the splitting mortars to down bots more easily for cash to upgrade the grapple
Will give it a go later on tonight. But is speed really worth putting on gold? I've never tried gold speed before so I'm just wondering of it makes that much of a difference.
Unfortunately, this will never get you as many kills as a normal gunner setup, though a gunner with gold speed IS hilarious
Speed is worthless as an endorsement. I almost always get 1 or more speed pickups after a kill or two. That way I can have four endorsements..... meanwhile you'll just have three.
Yeah, and with gold speed + speed endorsements you pick up on the ground, you become a gunner with assassin speed, it's hilarious chasing someone down then slamming them for a ring-out. It's all about positioning and how you use your mortars, etc. You don't get any less money than a normal gunner set-up, and as far as straight kills go you might have slightly less but you generally have a better ratio (not that I care, just saying) because you're not going rambo into a group of players and dieing after a kill or two. Plus you get the element of surprise, no one's looking for this style at all. I did well with it and it's hilarious to play, that's about all there really is to say about it. The less people that do it the better off I am cause it'll be more surprising, just thought I'd mention for anyone else that wanted to try it
Speed is a seriously under rated perk, and a smart choice for a mortar focused gunner (same for a nade launcher focused assault). Rate of fire on the mortar is just beastly too. Support can't heal turrets through your damage once you have triple split (at least not now, curious now RoF will change the heal gun next update). More importantly, taking down the turrets regularly means the match is much easier for the rest of your team. And honestly, the minigun will still be really damn good at mid-range. I need to try a variation on this. The mortar is way more fun then the minigun anyway.
Honestly, if you want to be mortar focused, I would do RoF as Gold - it's completely worth it. If you must use Speed, put it further down the list. Or remove it entirely, increase reload speed and clip size. It'd pay off more to get good at using your environment as your "speed", and there's plenty of opportunities to do just that.
Didn't particularly say it was the best setup ever or ultra efficient. I said it's hilarious and fun as hell to play and you can still post good scores doing it.
