Would there be any interest from teams in a highlander league (one of each class must play)?

This has been stated before, limiting teams to 1 class each will make matches boring and predictable. A large majority of the current teams/clans have said that they wouldn't want to be part of a league with that rule set.

In other words Grimbar said that he wouldn't have anything to do with a highlander league.

Boring my ***, it's all down to strategy and macro management then. In other games where K/D means a lot it could get boring and predictable but here you got all sorts of map hazards, bot and turret options and powerups, as well as an emphasis on bot escorts. Even if you had everyone play one of each, you still have a variety of additional toys to play with.

I want to see Highlander, semi-highlander and open leagues in the future, gimme more option rather than constant monotomy.

PS. Semi-highlander can either be 2 class limits or equal parts heavy, medium and light classes.

Boring and predictable? I'd like for you to point out exactly how. In fact, I'd say the open class matches will become more boring and predictable as teams find out the best set of 6 to run and never change classes anyway.

Also, if the "large majority" of teams don't want to be a part of a Highlander league, then that's fine, but I'll wait for them to actually respond, k?

Apparently people do enjoy Highlander, as there are over a hundred clans there. And before you say "this isn't TF2", let me say that highlander has been done with a number of games with great success.

You label it "boring and predictable" ...and how many MNC highlander matches have you played in?

I for one would have a lot of interest in a highlander league.

Coming from Europe, the only Highlander League that had garnered some interest was the one offering actual in-game medals,

Pretty much every other competitive (that is not low-skilled) player around our parts doesn't like it in TF2.

Highlander is also not very popular in US tf2 (the ETF2L version is the only time it ever got attention and mostly from pub players) and 6v6 is by far the dominate format for tf2 at mid-high levels of play.

"Best 6" is very misleading, especially if you are referencing tf2. "Standard 6" is better, and I would much rather play a game at its peak competitive potential than one that is super limited.

And how is it boring? Well its pretty simple. If you force 1 of each class you have already removed the depth of class usage in strategy. Yes there may be a standard 6 (though I doubt it since this is nothing like tf2), but even then the use of offclassing would create interesting twists and new strategies. It would allow teams to plan their team makeup around each map fully using each class' potential.

Besides, as people have said there has yet to be enough competitive-level testing to see what works and what doesn't.

Did you even click my link?

100+ clans seems pretty popular to me. And I can tell you for certain that a number of those people signed up are very high level TF2 players.

Sounds like we need to agree to disagree, Blavier.

You may not be interested in a Highlander league, but others are.

I'm not saying all of highlander is low skilled players, but the fact is 6v6 remains far more popular and is played at a professional (invite) level. Regardless of any relevance to MNC highlander is not that popular in the big picture in tf2. If you posted totals of 6v6 clans also (which would be difficult to gather) you may have a stronger argument.

True, but if any sort of strong competitive community is going to develop people are going to have to agree on a single standard format to start off with. As I believe Grimbar said about this topic in this forum before, if we have too many formats and leagues with different rules going around the competitive community will never agree on anything and it will die before it gets anywhere. TF2's highlander didn't become a league format until a year or so ago with 6v6 being the standard basically since release.

Sounds like crazy apocalyptic "what if" grounds there (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR3YvrNpssM).

You can't possibly have too many different rulesets, especially when we've got Mascot On/Off, Juice Buy On/Off, Hazards On/Off, so class limits is hardly going to be the end of the competitive side of MNC IMO.

Besides, even without class limits, the number of classes and the optimal team sizes and map sizes means that in our scrim between nRG and Team Chaotix they tried to roll with two assassins on LazeRazor, bringing their team makeup to 3 lights 2 mediums 1 heavy, and our perfectly balanced highlander team managed to break them down and destroy the moneyball, and we didn't even lose one turret after the mid-game.

IMO a highlander team could be considered the default since it requires a higher level of skill from each role rather than making up for what you lack with having more players comfortable in specific roles, when you neglect certain roles that help you complete objectives.

You base your argumentation on the fact that you beat a team using a certain team setup? Did you even consider that you may just have been better than them?

The baseline of my argument considered the start of this league, we need a solid foundation before we branch out and since Scathis and UberEnt spent some major time on balancing this for the default ruleset we should still evaluate that for months to come before we think about deviating from that.

To quote the mighty OD: "We just played highlander and it was boring." (which is about as worthy as your argument but I actually respect OD)

Edit: to clarify the statement in brackets, it's based on him being a massive whiner on pubs (it was like that back in beta, maybe he changed)

The problem with multiple rulesets is every "league" will have its own ruleset. There will be dozens of teams who play completely different ways because there is no standard. Playing a highlander comp is different if its within a different ruleset.

Maybe 2 assassins on lazer wasn't a good idea? Or maybe they should have swapped the assassin out for a different class (sounds like they kept the sniper so gunner maybe?)? Or perhaps you simply out played them.

Let's please not start with this. The ability to pair classes, in some cases, allows classes to become even better because they can focus on a more specific goal. The ability to work with your class partner creates strong team dynamics that have infinitely higher skill caps than understanding a class. It may not be the case for MNC, but if you want any competitive growth it would be better if highlander remained a team composition in a more varied ruleset.

Blavier I never once compared Highlander to non-Highlander popularity as you imply, and it's irrelevant to the point I was making regardless. All I did was show evidence that highlander leagues can be very popular and successful.

People just need to try some highlander matches before instantly deciding it's "boring and predictable". I'm sure there will be some who don't like it, and that's perfectly fine...but forming an opinion on something in which you know nothing about speaks for itself
