I don't get offended too easily, but what a bloody asswipe. Do millions of people not sit on their arse and watch sports? HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT!? Yeah yeah "he's a comedian it's a joke get over it" but this just reinforces the negative perception of gamers and it's just in poor taste. "The we should all be very ashamed of ourselves for failing as parents channel". Just wow. And I'll admit the second half with the "watching people watching people watching god" thing was kinda funny.
Well, as he pointed out, he's an old man. Not that this kind of thing holds true for most people of the older generations, but a good percentage of them do hold a negative stigma towards video games being a waste of time/money. Heck, there's even a percentage of the current young generation who likely still think they are. It's the kind of mentality that spawned from the era of when people looked down on video games and gamers as being nerdy losers with no life etc. Except the problem is that these days, a vast number of people play video games; and as YouTube has proven, the biggest and most watched thing right now is video games. Now we could go on to talk in depth about why that's the case, but I think the answer is simple. Companies are shelling out more money on big budgets story lines, graphics, soundtracks, voice actors... the overall production beyond just the gameplay aspect has drastically improved over the last decade; and suddenly someone can find enjoyment out of watching a video game being played as opposed to actually playing it. There's elements in there that can be enjoyed without having to play the game at all. That, or people really like the personality. In the case of PewDiePie; apparently people like his overreactions and screams etc. For me, I quite like watching people like SingSing, PyrionFlax, or SirActionSlacks while they play DOTA for the simple reason that they're kinda funny. More funny that other people who stick on their mugshot, play crappy rap music, and have a dull expression while playing 10 matches of DOTA a day.
Oh it's both. 99% of the stuff Jim Sterling plays is utter garbage that barely qualifies as a game, but he's still hilarious. But I'd watch almost anyone play Fallout or something.
Hey he has this video on youtube at the end of which he asks us to "Suscribe Favorite and Like" so ....... I think he's the butt of the joke here
Is there still a negative perception? I mean, I know there are people out there who still see video games as children's toys, but generally speaking I haven't seen anyone really enforce the whole "gamers are fat, lazy losers who will never amount to anything" nonsense. This is the first time in a while, and even then there was a huge backlash against it. So... negative perception?
I'm not a markiplier fan, but this could be interesting... Either that or it was all some crazy marketing scheme, but what are the odds of that? THE ODDS OF THAT ARE HIGH. VERY HIGH.
Maybe I'm too old to understand let's plays, 29 mind you. But I kinda agree with Kimmel. Seeing my little niece watching Youtube for hours, watching people play Minecraft when she could be playing herself. I just don't get it.
I don't get why someone would watch football when they could go out and play football but hey there you go.
I kinda like pros occasionally play games, but for hours on end? no thanks. I'm younger than you and i don't understand the craze. I also don't understand why Kimmel gets this much hate for it.
Maybe I'm just not a spectator. Never liked watching any sports on TV, never liked watching them in person at the arenas and stadiums, much less playing them. Never liked watching let's plays. Never liked watching people compete in videogames competitively in general. Which is why the concept of attending EVO with my friend who loves fighting games has 0 appeal to me. If I had that much interest in it, I'd just play myself I guess.
Spoken like a true fan. My girlfriend's response to him being on it was pretty funny. She loves him more than me.
To be fair, football and other televised sports have the element of competition to them. Some people enjoy watching skilled competition. Saying "why would you watch football if you can play it yourself?" is like asking ancient Romans "why would you watch gladiators fight lions if you could fight a lion yourself?". It's not about being able to do it yourself, it's about watching professionals do it. This also applies to eSports. Of course Let's Plays are something to watch more for the personality than the gameplay. Some people just want to hear funny or interesting commentary. Hell, sometimes I mute the sound of a game and have an LP on for background noise (mostly for games with soundtracks I don't care for). Like everything else in life, it all comes down to personal taste.
