This fake antivirus program installed itself onto my computer yesterday called "XP Home Security". Anybody heard of this or know how to get rid of it? I tried scanning with Avira but it wont detect it. It's slowing down the computer a crapton and it always says stealth intrusion on a little blip thing on the task bar. So yeah, any help?
Download Avira System Rescue and burn the image to a CD. Use another PC for that if possible. ASR is Linux based and will not load anything from your harddrive. Almost no chance for the virus to interfere with it. Run a scan on default settings and see if that helps. Make a backup of all your important documents just in case! Find your Windows DVD. If ASR removes the virus and it was deep in your system you might have to repair your Windows installation.
I have to say if I ever have any PC problems, beyond my poor system specs., I shall be in contact with you Jessup. Sorry for going Off-Topic...
I work in IT and we have a network with over 300 client PCs. Purging viruses is something we have a lot of experience with unfortunately. The worst thing are USB sticks from outside sources. Please, for your own protection, be careful what USB sticks you let near your PC - especially at school or in the office. Format those sticks whenever possible. Two weeks ago we had a USB stick that literally contained more malware than data...
Whatever the fake "antivirus" virus is, you should: 1) Disconnect infected computer from internet if you can. 2) Search the "fake antivirus" virus by name on Google. 3) On many sites, it tells you how to manually remove the virus. 4) Go Through the steps, including: A) Alt-Ctrl-Del > Process Tab > End Any Suspicious Non-Vital Processess B) Run > Regedit.exe > Delete Described Registry Entries C) Run > msconfig > Startup tab > Uncheck Anything Unusual, make sure you know what you're doing. 5) Afterwards, download a fresh version of malwarebytes or something, and scan your computer. This should catch whatever you missed and/or other viruses let in by the first. These steps are usually reliable when I fix computers with this problem. I have seen a lot of different viruses with creative and new ways of ****ing up your computer.
Not to mention that that is a classic way for hackers to get a backdoor into your system. A hacker shoves some malware onto a usb stick and then leaves it lying in the employee carpark. Employee picks it up and sticks it into their machine (maybe to try find the owner or maybe just because they're curious) and bam! Never trust unknown USB sticks. Good luck clearing up your virus. Get Avast! antivirus. It's free and does a pretty good job of protecting your system (after you clear out the malware/virus you already have ofc).
http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-xp-home ... -2011.html This site has a manual removal method, quite extensive list of stuff to delete http://www.spywares-remove.com/remove-x ... oval-steps
Just as a side note: Always backup everything. Like every week at least once. You might also want to install stuff in a virtual machine before you do it on a work machine. I also work in the IT business (support) and this is one of the most underused yet best methods. I also agree with Col_Jessep. USB-Sticks are made by the devil.
