Hi there! It's been some time since I peeked into theese forums, and I'm sorry if a similar thread exists somewhere but my search turned up nothing. I played PA from time to time to check on the progress, and for a while now Galactic War is in. At least a skeleton of it. Cause seriously, let's get back to the GW pitch video. There's a promise of a second layer of strategy on top of the Annihilation gameplay. I imagined it to be somewhat like Dawn of War SP campaigns where you control a faction in an overworld map and AI does the same, gathering resources, amassing troops, researching stuff and planning their conquest to finally meet and clash in the RTS part of the game. Or at least something of a similiar level of complexity. I fully expected to be surprised by the GW gameplay element. And I was. But it wasn't a good surprise. Cause right now Galactic War looks more like an overworld from Super Mario Land with random techs that may or may not be helpful and "turns" that are not turns at all (since AI does nothing there). I jump around some points, reading planetary fluff that is irrelevant to the rest of the game and praying that the next battle I have won't be against a commander that severely out-techs me. To be blunt - it's bad. Really bad. There's no strategy there, just random luck. Don't get me wrong, I like some randomness in a SP game, hell, I played FTL to death. But as far as a "whole new layer of strategy" goes this just fails and disappoints. I don't have any information that would allow me to even make an educated guess at where should I go next. So I have to ask UberEnt - are you guys working on it? Will it be closer to what was described in the pitch or will it be an iteration of what we can see now? By all means I'm not a pro player at this game and I don't play it every day, but the concept of Galactic War excited me and tipped the balance within me to back the game. Sorry for this rant, I still love the polish and balance changes that you applied to the RTS part of the game! I was just disappointed with the single player part of the experience.
As far as I know the current Galactic War is first pass. We'll get there at some point. Multiplayer Galactic War and AI turns (and a bigger galaxy!) would be something pretty awesome.
Gw really needs to be fleshed out, maybe that'll be in the release patch? Or maybe PTE is all we got :L
As others have said GW is still first pass. Uber will do something there but we'll just have to wait.
One of the main things I want in Galactic War (and that I want to play with with modding) are factions that are more than just colour and AI's likelihood to go bots/air/vehicles/etc. I want to face a faction that's had all of it's units weapons replaced with flamethrowers (i.e. has been given GW cards specific to that faction and/or boss), has really unique strats when attacking (like pincer movements, attacking your base from two sides at once), and has crazy things like a little jet pack on it's commander. AND THEN when you defeat them, you steal their tech, instead of getting something random, or maybe you can chose from their tech or a random card.
Well, having lost my first Galactic War and starting on my second, I'll tell you that the random cards really do make a gigantic difference. My first play through I got a lot of data banks early, and got a lot of stuff, including basic+advanced Air, and Complete Orbital, and Superweapons. Second time around I have five slots and very little of the swag from my last game. Can't make halley's anymore, can't make SXX, etc. So it is different.
