Well just an inspiration i had while writing stuff for the other flowfieldthread of mine. But shouldnt it be possible to use the flowfield as kind of communication like the pheromonic communication as shown by ants This could be used to save ressources for not creating permanently new flowfields but using 'established' paths. This could be used to create the suggested cost for danger zones(against artillery f.i.) This could be used for AI.
On a tangent, not for the game, have you heard of Ant Colony Optimization? Way too intense for any use in the game. Run virtual ants around, they leave pheromone, and eventually the optimal answer pops out. There are more details I'm skipping, but it's a neat things to hear about.
