I was playing football earlier, and this guy kept running the wrong way, every time I threw him the ball, he would catch it and run the wrong way.

Thats the one thing keeping football from being a 10/10 game.

lol, i'll give you that it has no buisness being called football here in America, would have made more sense to call it Tackle Ball or something (and would be more awesome) but come ooonnnn.. Soccer is SOOO boring to watch.... Its like watching two five year olds play air hockey.

The problem is compounded because in a DOTA-style game teamwork is SO important. In a typical shooter, if you're good enough you don't really "need" teamwork, you can just pick the class with the highest skill-ceiling (like a Sniper, or perhaps the Scout in TF2) and wreck the other team yourself. Because DOTA's have RPG elements and stat-hardcaps (in this case things such as clipsize and cooldowns), this is much MUCH harder to do.


No one player can fully carry a team if the other team is at all competent, and even one player not doing what they're suppose to can spell a guaranteed defeat. Often majority of the team will have to do unglamorous jobs such as tanking damage or killing minions while one or two players get to do the "fun stuff" of PK'ing and actually completing the final objective (in that way it's sort of like a sport in that you get star players and ones that are not as visible but still essential). However, for this "star player" to have his time to shine, the behind-the-scenes players much be doing their job first (because of the aforementioned stat-hardcaps, the PK guy can't push minions and turrets too because it's simply too much DPS to possible push out regardless of skill)

All this combined leads DOTA-style communities to typically become extremely elitist and a home for armchair-general type players.

Not saying that'll happen to MNC, but that's the trend from my observations of communities of this genre of games.



Edit: Also, Handegg has got to be the worst name for a sport I've heard since Curling (which sounds like an errand one has to run and really isn't even a sport).

It's a much bigger problem in DotA because the games last so much longer, and it's much harder to turn the game around if your team does poorly in the beginning. You end up playing 40-60 minutes in a game, and feel doomed and helpless for more than half that.. MNC games are much quicker, and the slippery slope isn't nearly as steep, so games can be turned around with a few decisive moves

They're both pretty boring to be honest, but at least soccer football has the benefit of not taking twelve and a half hours per game.

That's actually an interesting, which I'd believe. I'd rather keep my mind open and teach new players how to play if they want to. But even I would show signs of elitism.

Now, I don't like a community that's heavily elitist, and would rather leave that community than stay in it, in case I might catch a disease. Even if the game's so fun, I'd rather not play it, because the community is a load.

Anyway, I'm wondering why you made the post you did. Did you do that to warn us about that development or was there another reason?

Also, maybe that's why we need a comp community stat. Or would that invite the elitism you're speaking of?

Back to the finer points of a sport: I just was on a team where they buiild LaserFails EVERYWHERE. Switched teams and we ended the next two games in under 5 minutes. *sigh*

That's not very helpful. Wouldn't I do private matches exclusively if I knew how?

It's an 8/10 for me. I've been playing since August and have logged dozens and dozens of hours. Other people playing selfishly ruins my fun. So it will stay 8/10 until that changes.
