Instead of using a Stargate, I'd like to suggest a slightly different version of using "teleporting" in the game.

I call it the fabber-cube (or the fabber-gate - just a difference in design).

    There are two planets.
You have to build one fabber-cube on each of those planets.
    And that's it.

    The idea behind that:

When people normaly think about teleporting, they think about atoms and teleporting them to another position in time and space.
But do we need to go that far?

Do you know what a 3D printer is?
Take a look at these videos!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX6G-TluQHE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2MfTxyTdq8

    Like a construction lab. Right?
If you have the recources and the blueprint, then you can build a tank for example.

So, what's inside the fabber-cube? Fabbers! Whatelse?

The fabbers inside the fabber-cube on planet A are absorbing metal and energy from the robot you wan't to "teleport".
The fabbers inside the fabber-cube on planet B are rebuilding the robot with the same metal and energy you absorbed before. And that's it. Absorbing and rebuilding in realtime.

This process could take some time. Maybee not as much time as building a new robot, but it's not like traveling through a Stargate.
If the fabber-cube would be destroid while it absorbs metal and energy or while it rebuilds your robot, the robot would be destroid and your metal and energy are gone.

    That's my idea.

    [Edit: I've added a sketch]

For me this is teleporting... the preferred version though. I don't like teleporting that needs only one teleport-station rather than two.

Basically, it is a Stargate but instead of Molecules, it takes Metal and energy from a Robot and assembles it on the Other side? That's cool. As long as it is called the Ubergate. WE ALL WANT A UBERGATE!

You can do the same thing by linking resources across the sector, and having fabbers do the rest. No special utility is required.

    We need a UberGate.

Excellent idea and it should be built exactly like you described.

I'd like to have some PA models so I can print them on my 3d printer :)

Why 'Ubergate'? Isn't this exactly the principle of beamer to beamer transport in Star Trek?

Print them using jello so we can have Uber gummy robots, that would sell like crazy

Except resource drain is equalized and "production" is automated. It saves you from going to planet A, reclaiming the selected units, then going to planet B and building the same units over again. Minor detail (depending on how good your memory is) in that you also have to remember what units you reclaimed on planet A. Lastly, it's probably fairly simple to program (yeah, I'm pulling this assumption out of my rear). The fabber-cube would just be a universal builder/reclaimer and you could link them with ctrl+alt+# or something similar.

This sounds like you just want to build factory's at your destination, and economy buildings to fund them on safer worlds.

    A global economy model.

It actually has nothing to do with the economy model. It's about one (of many) internally consistent (as far as we know) ways of doing teleportation. My post was merely a way of doing it without adding additional systems.

Also you would need power to run the devices, right? So this might make them no good to use as quasi-production facilities.

I think this idea strikes just the right balance between sillyness, utility and grimdarkness that it would work nicely.

Well, you still have to build the receiving end, so you have to have some power.

I don't understand your intention. What I said was a response to this post:

Why would you think changing the semantics of teleporting is in any way productive?

Everyone in the world has a general grasp of what a teleporter is. Its function is self-explanatory.

No one knows what the fu©k a "fabber-cube" is.

Well, it has it's merit. There are various concept of how teleportation could work. The fabber-cube picks exactly one of those concepts and gives it a new name. I think it isn't a bad thing to do that. The quality if the name is subject to discussion though^^

Teleporting resources across worlds = sector wide economy.

A cube doesn't really change things. It could just as well be standard construction units and factories.

    Hi,

    Just a quick explanation:

It is not teleportation, if you think of it as a reconstruction.

I don't like the idea of a gate, where units walk through and appearing at the other end of the universe.
How much energy would such a device (wormhole-generator, quantum-gate?) suck up? A lot, I think.

Instead of using this, I thought: This is a robot. He was built out of metal and energy.
Absorb the metal and energy from the robot and spit it out like it was before, easily by using the same metal and energy.
All you need for that is one fabber that sucks the metal and energy up. And another fabber that spits it out.

You don't necessarily need a cube for that (or a gate). But I thought, it would be better for the gameplay, to let a device do the process.
Instead of using any fabber that drives around.
Otherwise, it seems to me as a blueprint converter. But this would be something different.

The absorbing process and the reconstruction process should be happen at the same time, without having access to the process itself, I think.

It is just a design aspect that has maybe a little impact to the gameplay dynamics.

Thats the mechanic of a Star Treck teleporter you are describing. The structure is dematerialized (converted to energy), send to destination at the speed of light, and converted back into solid matter. No wormholes, infinite speed or unlimited transfer rates, just simple matter transport.
