is there any other way to make dox and tanks ignore their formations? in ground combat this gives them a significant advantage. in fact, there should be a key that activates formations to allow for quick bunching and unbunching. it really pains me every time a massive force gets vaporized by a tiny one because of this.

If you ctrl click your move order, all units will break formation and try to go straight for the point you clicked. This includes if the point is somewhere in the middle of your troops, they will compress and move towards it.

Use attack move and grouped/bunched/assisting units will stay together. Thanks to @elodea for this tip in his last cookie cutter video :D
