I edited the [systemsettings] on both configs to have the game run on a lower quality, saved them, and went from 30 to 60 average fps, online.

Now all of a sudden, mnc refuses to run with those lower settings, and just runs on the lowest ingame settings.

The configs are not being overwritten, I have backups of them and tried replacing the configs with said backups, made/unmade them read-only, messed around with settings in-game, all to no result.

Sounds like you've broken the config files, and the game doesn't know how to read them properly.

Double check that you didn't add any garbage characters like commas or periods to any lines by accident.

The file that should be respected is the copy of hostileengine.ini that lives in your MyDocs\MyGames\UE3\HostileGame\Config
