I'm very passionate about my music, and I've been wondering what kind of lineup I would want if I could have any of my favorite artists collaborate. I wanted to create a band that sounded badass, but also had good chemistry and realistic. So I thought it through a little and here's what I came up with- A nice progressive metal group that can get as heavy as needed, while still keeping things intelligent and spontaneous. DRUMMER: Thomas Haake- Meshuggah The dude is just a rhythmic beast. He can play any sort of crazy polyrhythm in whatever made up time signature he comes up with. And on top of all this, he grooves like no other. Bleed- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap7Z5S6yTZM Electric Red- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMo5VxRrgcY BASSIST: Amos Williams- Tesseract This dude has some crazy slapping skill and always keeps it entertaining. His grooves even across odd timing are delicious. He also headbangs like a mofo, which is important for stage presence when playing live. CF Pt. III: The Impossible- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8GK_Ej7a5s April- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYhfH59OLC8 RHYTHM GUITARIST (8-String): Fredrik Thordendal- Meshuggah I chose the dude because he's just a rhythmic genius (See, Meshuggah). He's one of my biggest influences, created a genre (djent) and plays an 8-string guitar for all kinds of crazy tones. For those of you who don't know what an 8-string is all about, it adds 2 extra low-tuned strings to create a monstrous tone. He basically created the tone used by half of modern metal bands. Combustion- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYhfH59OLC8 Rational Gaze- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obcDrjPblxs LEAD GUITARIST (8-String): Tosin Abasi- Animals as Leaders This guy is my current idol. He does things I've never even seen on a guitar and unlike Thordendal, he uses the full range of an 8 string guitar. He shreds like a beast, he's got the groovy rhythms, and he's got commanding stage presence (saw them live in October). He also thinks outside the box, playing around with sounds ranging from blues, jazz, and classical to heavy metal. CAFO- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfzWpp0 ... re=related Wave of Babies- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt-RoSzsEKA Isolated Incidents- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsHHYx2fiv4 KEYBOARDS/PIANO/CONTINUUM/VARIOUS ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS: Jordan Rudess- Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment He's known as the wizard for a reason! The guy was attending Juliard at age 12 and is probably the most knowledgeable and talented musician alive today. He's been a part of countless projects spanning a variety of music. And he's just a technical machine on top of all this. Another Day- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt5QokpgMno Time Crunch- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z7V94NH9pk (Need I say more?) The Dance of Eternity- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPKrOMifeq4 VOCALS: Russel Allen- Symphony X This man has the voice of an angel. This man also has the voice of a demon. He just can do it all, from nice melodic ballads, to screaming falsettos, to grungy mid-range. Paradise Lost (Softer)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyvOJlX4ZkE Set The World on Fire (Heavier)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG8orlq6_yE&ob=av3n So I think this band would sound nasty and would truly be a piece of progressive metal/jazz/classical art. Post your own supergroups!!!
guitar: jimmy page - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1yUvdQnERk vocals: robbert plant - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rzX9sZrtlw bass: john paul jones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J8-xmbfBWc drums: john bonham - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw1HWuF4LAM /thread
yeah, the OP probably doesnt have any taste in music, much less the ability to play an instrument. and he probably had sex with any and every jeff within a 20 mile radius of his house. - - - EDIT: Bonham didnt die.
I've seen Meshuggah in concert, when they opened for Tool at the Breslin Center. Tool is definitely my favorite band of all time, but I think your taste in music skews much more heavily towards metal than mine does. I listen to a lot of music, but I guess my personal taste tends to be hip hop. However, if you can turn on the radio and hear it, that's not the kind I'm talking about. In the spirit of your post, I'll try to make a slightly more traditional band though. DRUMMER/PERCUSSION: Meg White Just kidding. DRUMMER/PERCUSSION: Danny Carey - Tool Always loved Carey, and he has a ton of great songs, but the one that put him over the top for me is 'Right in Two', from their newest album '10,000 Days'. I kept thinking his solo was over, but it never stopped getting faster, and I love it. 'Right in Two', by Tool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLjrD-oXkhA BASSIST: Les Claypool - Primus It is impossible to say that Claypool doesn't belong as the bassist of any supergroup. Anyone that says so is unaware of who Les Claypool is, and as such, should be shot. If you really don't know who he is, I should point out that he's also the singer. Just Click 'Em: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M_jh4CA8a8&ob=av2e <--- My Fav http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYDfwUJzYQg&ob=av2e http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijBAG2O9GZs GUITAR: Gonna skip this one right now. Might update it later. There's just a lot, and it's late. If that doesn't work, just say Tom Morello or something. KEYBOARDS/PIANO/CONTINUUM/VARIOUS ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS: To me, this category means 'People That Make Noise Musically'. Keyboardists, samplers, mixers, producers, Teapot, Snarf (although he will be the best at all of these categories one day, if he tries hard enough), and whatever the fvck a dubstep is. So this is the category where some of my other musical heroes get inserted, and somehow, they will display their amazing musical talent, not to overshadow anyone, but simply to make things sound interesting, well produced, and to make some sounds that don't really come from human hands. In my mind, these people will just kind of brainstorm and do a lot of cool sh!t. Trent Reznor/NIN: "Down In It" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrrEo3hZABU&ob=av3e Beck: "Where It's At" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPfmNxKLDG4&ob=av2e "Guero" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIqHFUNfnAk The RZA/M0therfvcking WU-TANG: "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsiAsTa0oEI "Protect Ya Neck" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMd0gbrXceI Basically the whole "36 Chambers" album. Ol' Dirty Bastard is awesome, and basically coherent. +Others VOCALS: Freddie Mercury of Queen The most versatile male vocalist ever, and probably beats any female as well. Would be able to sing over even the most complex and technical rhythms, in any style. Most people already have their mind made up about Freddie Mercury, but anyone who listens enough realizes the man is remarkable. The consummate showman, he would be the frontman and the soul of the group. I'm truly sad that Freddie Mercury was lost so early. There are a ton of Queen songs worth listening to, so I'll just pick the one that basically decided this choice for me. My roommate in college played "A Night At The Opera" on vinyl for me, which is basically Queen's attempt at a modern opera, with some rock sensibilities. It's an amazing performance, but 'The Prophet's Song' is the best track to showcase Mercury's range. His vocal solo, starting at about 3:20, is huge. Keep in mind that this track was a lot harder to produce in 1975 than it would be today. There are a sh!tload of tracks layered in there, and it's pretty much just Mercury harmonizing with himself. If this track doesn't leave you thinking Mercury would be the greatest rockstar frontman of any supergroup ever, I don't know what will (but hopefully others could suggest some). THIS IS THE ONE LINK TO CLICK IF YOU DIDN'T CLICK ANY OTHERS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xmsXqgHHEI Anyway, can't sleep and got interested in the topic. I hope I at least put in some fun links. P.S. Freddie Mercury was a ROCKSTAR.
I love Tool as well. They were probably the first band I ever really got into and obsessed over and still listen to.
Bass-Les Claypool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYDfwUJzYQg joe satriani-guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjNAeELQ_Z8 Eric Johnson-guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15eu7ar5EKM Kevin McKinney-vocal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBkwq1GRcNw Neil Peart-drums http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHkucr1jJpQ
I'm glad you agree about Claypool, but link a song that I didn't already link. Also, to Shammas, I was more interested in what you thought about Queen. Everyone knows Tool is the sh!t.
I like listening to Queen, I've just never really been huge into any classic rock. Freddie Mercury is a beast though and I like that choice. But I want to make sure you guys are aware that I didn't pick "the best" at each instrument, because that would be a different list. I chose 6 guys who play similar styles of music and would mesh pretty well in a band.
I thought the point of a supergroup was to make one or two amazing albums, have a huge ego-ridden fallout, then watch the careers of the individual members slowly waste away... Have you ever listened to any of the 'Desert Sessions' albums? Basically, Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age would get a bunch of relatively well-known musicians together, they'd take off to the desert for a short period of time, and while they were there they would improvise a bunch of songs. Some really kickass stuff (although I haven't listened to all of them, they're on my hard drive, waiting to be listened to, in an extremely legal fashion...). Pretty sure the vinyl is pretty expensive. And agreed, Mercury is a beast.
I just wanted to bump this to include 2 more videos of Thomas Haake- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW9iHU-KiBk and Amos Williams- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAGqCAsk3gQ Aweeeesome!!!
