I'm curious what kind of cold remedies people are using. I've just discovered a tincture last year and have been so impressed at how well it's been lessening the severity and time spent being sick. Maybe I'm jinxing myself for asking, but what kind of remedies do you use to keep from getting sick?
A heating pad. Oh wait this isn't the joke thread. I'm lucky. I live in FL I can't get cold here. Though if I feel like I am starting to get sick I just take some Airbourne (or Emergen-C) to help fight it.
Ok the current cold remedy is now as follows: 2 oz of scotch 3 oz of Nyquil 3 dashes of Sirracha hot sauce or Franks red hot 2 ice cubes serve in a small glass with cigarette.
Random question (it is winter related therefore cold related therefore not offtopic), you live in Finland right? Is the sun already gone by now?
This one weather forecast site says it's up for ~5 hours a day at the moment though you can rarely see it since it tends to be pretty cloudy all throughout the winter.
To be serious, for a cold I usually supplement any meds with Egg drop soup. Just get a double order from your local chinese take out place. Ok, customize hot sauce to taste.
Sore throat miracle cure: Mix honey + lemon juice, gargle. Although since you want advice for preventing illness: Sleep. As long as I get plenty of sleep I rarely get sick. When I start to lose sleep over school or work, then I usually get sick.
My friend's somewhat masochistic cold remedy: - A couple fingers of scotch (or whatever you prefer but it needs to actually make you sweat) - Cover yourself with about a dozen blankets - Sweat it out for a few hours. Never tried it, and frankly, I'd rather stay sick, but if you like experiments, there's something to try.
I feel like the shot of whiskey/scotch/bourbon probably helps dull the nerve endings in your throat. Does it have any other properties? Cuz I never hear anyone say, "take a shot of vodka" or something, but I bet it'd do the same. I've tried the sweat-it-out method. It's not really fun at all and it seems impossible to hydrate fast enough. I like the spicy stuff idea. I don't know how lymph nodes could ship off more white blood cells due to spice, but I like it! To the laboratory!! (aka: kitchen)
I also live in FL and get a cold every 4 weeks. I take a bath, get in my comfiest clothes (soft sweatshirt, sweatpants) and play some video games... Manliest remedy ever. (Also tylenol)
I'm surprised nobody suggested Japanese mint oil yet. Put that under your nose and on your chest before going to bed. You can put some on a Q-tip and rub it in your nose if you are feeling adventurous... Get an extra blanket or two and you should be feeling better in the morning. If you already got the cold you can put 1 or 2 drops in hot water and inhale deeply. You can add some eucalyptus oil as well. On top of that Earl Gray with lemon.
I very rarely get sick, I sometimes go years without. However, right now I'm suffering from a pretty pesky flu, it started 1.5 weeks ago with a sore throat (including not being able to talk a few days later) following it developing into a cough, ughh... I take a flu shot every year, which seems to help prevent most of the flus to some extend. Other than that, when I actually do get a flu, I just sit it out. Painkillers, Ventolin inhaler (I usually start using this when I start coughing and 9 out of 10 times it completely prevents the flu from developing), codeine phosphate (which prevents cough reflex when its too late). Other than that, liquorish and Fisherman friends Best thing you can do is not let it stop your daily routine, keep going to work, etc. I've only stayed at home one day (when the flu was at its worse) to prevent my colleagues from getting sick as well.
