One of my biggest problems with RTS games is the UIs. Many games have this unessasary giant bar on the bottom with a whole bunch of numbers and pictures that to me, ruin the game. The game "Halo Wars" has a nice clean UI that is very simple. Even though the game got horrible reviews (i beg to differ) the UI definetly was one of the high points. It basically consists of a rectile that you move around to select things, a minimap, and a small bar next to the minimap and the bar only contains 3 sources of info. heres a video for those how need video proof (not my vid, i take no credit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAZegSzSJQQ I know that you may have to add a few new buttons just b/c is across worlds but if you can please try to limit the UI, it makes everything much simpler and user friendly!
Have you played a strategy game on PC before? From the video I can see that the UI looks pretty much the same as C&C 3 on console (which I have the unfortunate honor of owning). The entire ui is designed for two things: To work on a ridiculously low resolution screen known as a Standard-Definition TV and to compensate for a control scheme which is about as far from optimal for RTS as you can get. Halo Wars itself is a far more simple game than the likes of TA or Supcom, you would need to seriously redesign the UI before it would be remotely compatible with those games.
I want to know which RTSs you're basing all this on, because, frankly The FA UI is pretty minimal. FA was pretty good, although I bet it could still be a bit tighter. Seeing as how the UI is going to be in javascript, this could easily be a modding competition for everyone. Try to make the cleanest UI that uses the least amount of space, and is still easy to use.
Then why didn't you say so? If that is your frame of reference this topic kinda lost it's point, Uber knows how to make a UI. Mike
