I've encountered a bug where the screen will either suddenly flash white and planet will go completely black. It will happen shortly after the game starts up and it didn't happen until after the update with the fix for Radeon HD 4000 series cards that prevented the game from loading correctly. I'm using a 4890 and did the fix manually before the patch was released. The flashes seem to be random but I've had them subside only to reappear once I start playing. It also doesn't always happen immediately, but as I continue playing the flickering will come and go. I tried to print screen the flashes but it came out completely black, if there is an in game button to take a screen shot with I'll go ahead and do that. My drivers and OS should all be up to date but I included the dxdiag just in case.
This sounds like a HDR bug that has popped up and fixed a few times. Could easily just be rearing its head again. Try turning off HDR and see if that solves it, temporarily at least.
