Just got this game for PC loving it so far, but I suck and am pretty confused. Whats the best class to start with that is easy enough to learn the basics of the game with? I was kind of leaning towards support since I like the medic a lot in TF2. Any thoughts?

As with most games, the (soldier) assault seems to be the best.

Each class plays very differently, so my first suggestion is to play a few games with each and see if one jumps out at you.

Support requires a little more thought and understanding of the game, to figure out where firebases should go, or to notice chip damage on turrets that needs to be repaired, but if you enjoy medic in TF2 go for it. Just remember you're offensive support too with the arty strikes (kills enemy firebases in one hit)

For people with little to no TF2 experience, I suggest assault or gunner, just because they're a little more flexible. Assault if you prefer mobility and area denial, gunner if you prefer killing power.

Assault. He's the middle class. The jack of all trades, master of none.

He doesn't have a pronounced weakness, or a main strength. He's the class that can fill up every other role, and can adapt to most every situation.

Plus, the tutorial uses the Assault, so you start off with a fair knowledge of his abilities anyways.

The tank and assault are probably the best default (non-custom) classes, and are both pretty versatile

Assassin is the worst thing to try to start with

QFT. I started as Assassin and almost uninstalled the game after an hour or so of feeling useless and frustrated.

I agree with most that Assault is a great starting class.

I'd say Gunner - his skills are mainly unneeded (bar Gunner 3, maybe Grapple 2) and he has enough firepower to last through the game, even without Gunner 3 (Though it really helps).

Just gotta get out quick when there are signs of trouble.

    Thanks for all the info!
    Followup question:

One guide I could really use, is one that goes over map objectives and level strategy. What are all the different things you can do on a map? When should I be using the special things you pay for to spawn the special bots? What exactly do they do? Whats the ejector thing? When should i be escorting, when should I be PKing? etc. Ill probably have these answered just by reading through the wiki and playing more though =)

There are three "hazards" in the game. Ejectors, Annihilator, and Juice.

First I'll explain the Annihilator. It is in the direct center of every Crossfire map and cost $250 and is available every 3 minutes. What the Annihilator does is destroy every enemy bot on the field and does a bit of damage to enemy Pros (players). You'll notice the Annihilator itself is floating in the air just above the button for it.

Ejectors are cheaper and have a smaller effect then Annihilators. Ejectors only cost $50 and is available every 60 seconds, I believe. By every ejector button you'll notice an exclamation on the floor with a circle around it. This is where the ejectors center is and if you walk up to the button, without pressing it, you can see it's radius. What the Ejector does is destroy enemy bots and knocks back & stuns enemy Pros that are standing within it's radius.

Juice is MNC's power-up. It gives you 1000hp and a whole lot of added damage. There are a few ways to obtain juice and each map has two Juice Dispensers, around the Annihilator, where you can purchase some for $500. Upon activation juice only lasts 10 seconds or until you die.

Imo, you should always be escorting your bots, only chasing.killing other Pros when you absolutely need to but it all boils down to your personal preference of game style.

^ One thing about that is wrong though. In the map spunky cola, the juice dispensers are at your and your enemies' base.

Furthermore, if you played the tutorial, you know what all the special bots are supposed to do. Otherwise, go in-game and read the playbook.

a tip: in the beginning of a map, only upgrade one skill to 2. that way you'll have some cash left and you'll be able to activate jump pads/ejectors etc.

Not if you're Tank. I've found that having Passive 2 (armour) and either PB or Charge (more so charge now) lets you push really hard early on and put the entire team on the defensive.

Tank and Gunner are both very straightforward and easy to play decently. I'd start with one of those to learn the game with. They're also probably the two strongest pros with the game's current balance.

Assault would be next. He has more tricks skills to learn and keep track of, which can be difficult at first. He's also not as strong straight up as the above two, which will probably lead to more deaths and frustration until you learn how to take advantage of his mobility.

Support is more nuanced, needing good use of the skills and good knowledge of the maps to be most effective (for firebase placement and use of his two short ranged weapons). That said, as long as you're using all 3 skills decently and supporting your teammates, it's a pretty good class. Once you've played all the maps a couple times, go ahead and give him a shot.

Sniper is pretty straightforward, but usually very removed from the action which slows down learning the maps and mechanics. It's also much harder to snipe well in MNC than in most games. A good sniper can be a great help to a team, but it's a long road and IMO a more specific player skillset is needed than for the other pros. Best leave learning it for later. Sniping won't help you get better at anything other than Sniping.

Assassin plays the opposite of Sniper, yet the drawbacks are similar in that both are best used by someone with good knowledge of the game's basics and who's ready to dive into something more advanced. They're also very weak now compared to how they were in beta; IMO there is no point in playing them at all with the game's current build. Don't start MNC as one, you'll only help your team lose.

I never upgrade passive 2 at the beginning when I'm tank. If I feel I really need the extra health right of the bat, I'll just make two tank builds: one with gold armour and whatever and another that I'll use for most of the match. I'll start out with gold armour and then switch whenever I get passive 2. Heck, you can use the stock tank for the first few minutes. This way, I can start out with both Stickers and Charge and then clutch passive whenever I need after killing some bots. Or just save up for charge 3 or clusterf***.

Anyway: the class to start out with... I dunno. All of them can work, I guess. It depends on your playstyle. I'd say a class that's good at killing bots is a good choice. The tank and assault come to mind, though the assault really isn't THAT good at killing bots. The assassin too, but you really need a custom build with gold or silver armour to use her effectively and you need to resist the urge to play deathmatch. This way, you learn to focus on achieving your objective rather than just deathmatching. Once you learn the flow of the game, the rest should come naturally.

I laughed a bit at this. Such advanced tactics as: Run around mashing grapple, running away if it doesn't kill, and sitting outside a spawn tunnel mashing grapple.
