so i played a quick round of the alpha, and one of the most interesting problems that caught my attention wasn't really the many bugs, but an issue of getting a good picture of the battlefield. since the game is going to take place across the face of a planet, and eventually many planets, it became difficult quickly for me to keep track of units and enemy positions even a moderate distance from my home base. so what i'm thinking is once you discover a structure, it gets rendered at its last known position and state until you clear the fog of war around it again, and maybe make them glow teamcolor so they're a little easier to spot in the fog of war. in addition, and this is kind of the big one for me, if the player can see or has seen something on the far side of the planet, have it go ahead and render too, like a transparent thing or maybe an icon or maybe make the planet semitransparent... something, so i can see where stuff is relative to me, even when it's on the far side of the planet. maybe make it so moving around planets was less freeform too, since i tend to get quickly disoriented after scrolling around the planet for a while and it gets all upside down maybe a compass at least?
Pretty sure that's going to work exactly like supreme commander and most other RTS games. Discover something, and its strat icon stays behind after you lose vision.
