Hi Uber, I was wondering when we can expect a performance update. I play on a pretty beefy system with a 3,8ghz quad core processor (i7) and a Geforce 680 GTX OC-ed. I can run BF4 on high settings and get between 40-60 fps. In PA, even if i set all settings to medium and 75% downsampling, even in windowed mode, i get between 10-25 fps. This game plays (by far) the worst of all current next-gen games out there (BF4, Planetside 2, Arma3, Borderlands 2, Even SupCom 2 plays at least 4 times better than PA at the moment. I'm hoping the fps and performance will be increased serveral times over. As for now it's simply unplayable!
There's a big improvements coming to the virtual texturing system, This should hopefully improve overall FPS. Soon other items like the units wil be handled by instancing like the trees (at the moment i think each unit is in ram individually) this will also improve FPS when you have BIG armys. Also other items like Particle emitter caps will hopefully soon be added in to the settings. Unfortunately optimizations usually come late in the development cycle, first of all most of the core features need implementing an testing before polishing and optimizing take place, there's no point in optimizing while there is bug's and crashes.
Thanks for the fast response! I understand improvements come in the late-development. It's just that i've seen many video's of other players which seem to have much better performance - but i can't really figure out what the difference is. Well i guess i just have to wait and see. As far as my opinion goes - performance and speedy/responsive gameplay is one of the most important parts of a good game, even with strategy games. Not only does this make the game feel fast, responsive and pleasant, it will also affect your effectiveness in battle. Though you won't specially need 60+ fps for razor fast gameplay in a RTS, a minimum of 30-40 fps on a quite beefy system should be reached. As i mentioned, the current 15-25 really is a pain in the @$$. On the bright side: I must confess the game comes along nicer than i expected so my $90 seem to get well-spended. (if only i could play the game on 40 fps - than i would be (really) satisfied! ) Good luck.
I agree about performance being an important thing. I have made a few Performance Mods for the game to help some people. But it comes down to compatibility and drivers, there are so many CPU, RAM, and GPU configs making a game compatible with as many of them as possible takes time. I'm also hoping to see awesome framerates closer to release, im sure the dev's at uber are quite capable of it, they just need the time to do the many things involved in making the title with the few staff they have on hand.
Yes, making a game run on all the different combinations of MoBo, CPU, GPU and ram sure is a hell of a job. Sony's PlanetSide 2 is working on improving gameplay with the entire team for multiple months now (though they did manage to get significantl improvements!) However my config of my system is quite a common one, with one of the most popular ASUS Motherboards (X85) - one of the most popular CPU's (i7-930 OC to 3,8ghz) - dual SSD in RAID striping - and 12 GB fast DDR3 gaming RAM at 1T timings and last but not least: an OC-ed ASUS GTX 680. It's still strange to me that PA runs as bad as it does - even tough my hardware is most of the commonly used - it really and truly is unplayable for me at the moment.
Nice. Yeah i agree again, i'm totally not sure where the issue is that causes performance to drop on certain machines, i have 3 test pc's running at my house and the one i have that performs the best while playing PA is my tablet pc (my 4th test pc blew a PSU it was my beasty i7 with 2 ATI HD 6870's). I get 25-35 FPS zoomed in on the planet and 50+ FPS zoomed out at icon/strategic veiw and 140+ FPS in the celestial view. My tablet has an i5 dual core 1.7ghz - 2.6ghz turbo CPU (i5 3317u) , intel HD 4000 chipset @ 750mhz GPU clock, and 4gb ddr3 ram.
Did you play the BF4 beta? Because compared to the BF4 beta, the PA beta runs like a dream! Oh wow. I'm on an i7 3610QM on a laptop. Graphics is 2gb Nvidia 650M. Frame rate for BF4 beta was less than 20. Frame rate for PA is slightly better than yours, playing on a grossly inferior system..
I got gtx 780 classified with i4 ,iff i get 30 fps on half settings its too mutch. Something here its not working well indeed.
