One of my favorite things about TA was all the shortcuts that allowed quick retaliation. You could assign and select squads, and tell them to move / attack / patrol / guard. I remember always having a group of stealth fighters that were squad 1, and whenever I was being attacked anywhere on the map, I could quickly select them with Alt+1 and send them (and they would arrive <10 seconds later).
