I looked through the options on MNC multiple times looking for something along these lines. I can't seem to find a way to change my in-game username. It's not the worst thing in the world to be sporting my Steam username, but I would really prefer if it were something else.
you can change your Steam Nickname, which is the name that shows in MNC. though i don't see a reason to be changing it unless there's some reason you don't want others to know you're the same player
Note that if you do this, you have to change your Steam nickname before you start up MNC. If you change it while MNC is running, I don't think it shows the new name. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
I agree that it would be nice, if unnecessary, to be able to change your name while MNC is open. I's not really a common occurance, but there are times when I would like to change my name, as a joke or whatevernbut am unable to. Not important, but nice nonetheless.
