Just curious if this stretch goal = live stream? I know Mavor feels a bit prickly about getting negative responses from pre-release material and with Just Cause. It's still Uber's game and they should still have control and direction of their project. I remember that little "mini tours" for the sound guy. Will we see more of that? With other artists and the technical design team? Orchestra day? I think it would be really cool to see some more concept art, especially the design process, like 4 art concepts, scratch 3, went with 1 kind a thing. Like the process of evolution of that art. I remember how everybody got super excited for the Commander art pieces that game out. And maybe even some notes or tidbits including how you make decision on gameplay issues. This documentary thing was never really something I cared about too much. I'd prefer more time spent on the game. But I was just wondering if it's just collecting all that info waiting to release it later?
Mavor's Rant on terrain geometry thing is pretty sweet. Even like a 5 minute video blurb on stuff like that awesome. Set a go-pro at the office watercooler. Basically staff come for coffee, do a 2-3 minute speaker's corner thing and continue on their way. Collect clips at the end of the week. Example Video blurb: Art Guy: "Hi, I'm the art guy looking after the tanks and ships. I was thinking about The Javelin, our heavy missile tank. I think particle effects of a anime-style cluster missile system would be awesome and never done well in an RTS, it would definitely look better than the single-missile tanks from TA and SupCom, but in a deathball, visibility might be an issue, especially with smoke effects. Will try to find a compromise. Will brainstorm and report later". Art Guy: "Hey, me again, I talked to the the code guy about the Javelin Tank. He says cluster missiles will be too demanding on engine and will hurt scaling of the game. Says multiple sequential missiles launched sequentially are essentially re-using old code for single missile but with a tiny tweak. Looks like we can add another unit type!" Maybe things in the office don't quite run that way. But this is the kind of stuff I am very curious about since you guys are building this from the ground up.
So we've recorded quite a bit of footage over the course of the project. We've also been using fraps to capture work in progress. Steve also has tons of screenshots that show the project chronologically so we can make a time lapse. We also have things like interviews of team members applying etc. We'll definitely be filming the orchestral recording session as well. As for showing more concepts well... there aren't any. Since we whitebox units they pretty much are their own concept at this point. The unit scale renders we released for example. The biomes had more concepting and we've been showing you guys that stuff. Anyway once we are done we will cut all of the footage together into a documentary. Figuring out what to leave in that tells the story is going to be the hard part since we have so much random footage.
I'd have thought there would have been more concept art/sketches like there was with the biomes and the original 3 commander concepts. It is really interesting seeing how production is working here. I have been following a few crowd funded projects and there is very definitely a difference in development style which is fascinating to watch : )
You can show us current version of the whitebox. It would be interesting to see how it changed over time.
